Practically all the classic Thanksgiving foods are from Native people: turkey, corn, cranberries, etc. And they are good to eat, but while you do, you can learn the true history of this holiday by listening to those same people! The Wampanoag are here today and every other day of the year.

Sam White Owl's dad is black, but he lives in Washington state, part of the Pacific Northwest. Also in the PNW are many Indigenous groups, including the Haida and Tlingit, who once had war canoes with ARMORED KNIGHTS!!! November is Native American/Indigenous People's Month, and I just realized that, purely by coincidence, my debut novel, which also features an Indigenous (Oklahoma Cherokee) protagonist, comes out on the 25th! And last month, I connected deeply with my Taíno roots in Puerto Rico. PERFECCIÓN!

In the Letters, chupacabras are highly adaptable relatives of procyonids like raccoons. They prefer small prey, but humans aren't off-limits...

1492, the year we discovered some Spanish guys lost at sea. Those of us with roots in Puerto Rico (a.k.a. Borikén = "homeland") are proud of our European and African roots too, but we're still Taíno and still here, as are our cousins across Turtle Island and beyond! Happy Indigenous People's Day!

To address some recent BS... I'm proud to be of the Taíno of Borikén (Puerto Rico), who met Columbus. He wrote: "...we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want". We lost a lot of people and parts of our culture, but WE'RE STILL HERE, and VERY proud of who we are. 😁 ¡WEPA! 🇵🇷
