Dorothy Constance Stratton was born March 19, 1899. As Dean of Women at Purdue she created a liberal science curriculum beyond home economics and established a women’s employment center. In 1942 she was appointed the Director of the newly created US Coast Guard Women’s reserve.

LWV works to raise voter participation in every election. Statistics clearly show that voter turnout is lower in spectator states than battleground states in Presidential elections. Every vote in every state should count in every election and the National Popular Vote Bill will make that a reality.

In a race we expect the fastest runner to be the winner. We should elect our presidents the same way – add up all the votes, every vote equal, most votes win. Who can argue against that. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact will make it happen. North Carolina should join.

Lynda Bird Johnson Robb was born March 19, 1944, eldest daughter of Lyndon (36th President) & Lady Bird Johnson. In 1968 she was a founding member of Reading is Fundamental and chair of the Board for five years. As First Lady of Virginia she launched the Virginia Women’s Cultural History Project.

Alice Greenough Orr was born March 17, 1902 near Red Lodge, Montana. She early showed an aptitude for riding bucking horses. In 1929 Greenough Orr joined Jack King’s Wild West Show. In her career she performed in 46 states, Australia, & Europe; she also did stunt riding for movies & television.

We cannot wait for a Constitutional Amendment to abolish the Electoral College. We need to National Popular Vote Interstate Compact to ensure a popular vote winner in every election and a peaceful transfer of power.

Julia G. Ray, a pioneering Black business owner and civic leader left an indelible mark on her beloved Asheville. With her husband, Jesse, she owned Ray Funeral & Cremation Service and became the first Black person on the boards of the YWCA in Asheville, UNC Asheville, and Mission Hospital.

Julia Wolfe took her son Tom to see Woodrow Wilson inaugurated March 1913 & arrived the day before. "Suffragettes were forming to make their parade and they had a stack of banners. I said "Tom run across there and get me one of those banners. I think I’ll march with ‘em. I believe they’re right.’”

If no candidate receives an absolute majority of the electoral votes (at least 270), the U.S. House of Representatives chooses the President on a one-state-one-vote basis. The District of Columbia has no vote in this process. We need the National Popular Vote as a first step to fixing this.

Lupe Anguiano was born on March 12, 1929 to a migrant family that worked in Colorado & California. She collaborated with Cesar Chavez, leading a grape boycott in Michigan and was an organizer for United Farm Workers. Anguiano is a founding member of the National Women’s Political Caucus.

Priscilla Ndiaye Robinson is a community historian/preservationist whose work is recognized for contributions to historic preservation/community memory. She documented impacts of urban renewal on African American communities in Ashevlle leading to the film "Urban Renewal Impact: The Movie."

States have changed how they change their electors over time. When Massachusetts passed the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact in 2010 it was the 12th time it had changed how its instructions. It is time for North Carolina to make a change and join.

Louise Pearce was born March 5, 1885. An MD, her entire career was at the Rockefeller Institute; she was the first woman to have a research position there but was never promoted to be a full member. Her research led to a treatment for sleeping sickness (a parasitic disease) in Africa.

Herstory Jacqueline Joyner was born March 3, 1962 in East St. Louis, Illinois. Joyner attended UCLA starring in both basketball & track and field. Joyner-Kersee earned medals in in the Heptathlon and Long Jump in four Olympics (1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona, 1984 Los Angeles and 1996 Atlanta).

Public support for electing the President by popular vote is increasing. We need to have the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact by 2028.

An early 20th century educator and suffragist leader, Nannie Helen Burroughs was an early president of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, campaigning on behalf of women's right to vote. Her work helped make our democracy stronger for all Americans.

The Voting Rights Act in 1965 stopped discriminatory voting laws from going into effect and causing damage to the ability of Black voters to participate. As the bill was reauthorized by Congress, legislation also helped to end discriminatory voting tactics used against other communities of color.

A 1960s report "Federal Protection of Negro Voting Rights" found southern states had registration levels in the Black population in the low teens. Black voters who were registered were being disproportionately targeted by literacy tests, ID requirements & “poll taxes” that white voters were not.
