Reading Crowntide, Lightlark #4, by Alex Aster! Boy, if only her publisher let her write instead of making her publish 3 books a year— I've never seen a series get so noticeably worse in prose, quality, plot, EVERYTHING. I didn't like lightlark, but at least it felt like someone tried somewhere. ☠️

I continue!! My video review of Oro/Grim (Lightlark book 3.5) should be out fairly soon. Excited to have it out— it's an absolute mess of misogyny, plot holes, and slop. ....meanwhile, my Fallen London fancomic Creatures of Heaven hit THREE HUNDRED PAGES, I finished chapter 6 a few days ago, and excited to start 7— the final chapter! :D I did a ton I'm really chuffed by, this continues to be such a great creative exercise. You can read it without knowing FL Btw!

Grim and Oro by Alex Aster is so far.... Despite being called fanservice, woof, the characters are unpleasant, creepy, and act bizarre. there's a kiss (the endgame, author fav couple!) that is SO gross. I don't like kissing so I ran a poll. The overwhelming sentiment I hear is "literally gagworthy"

I am obsessed with Modelland as I knew I'd be. I still can't figure out how to describe it. Transcendental. So horrific yet so blasé about it. My fav is yhe completely incidental side character of "mutant lizard man trekking to modelland to eat the pancreas of a 15 Yr old"

Make suncrab canon, i cry, like it isn't already so deeply canon it's the foundation of the entire universe. But also. everything about it is so uncertain we can't even be sure they even like each other #fallenlondon

I don't think modelland was written in our reality. This is, so far, the best way I got to describe it

of all the books I've covered, I think the one that still haunts me the most is 'Precious Blood'. I will be restrained (I will resist) but never has a book tempted me to hunt down the people involved so I can shake them by the shoulders. WHO at Simon and Schuster okayed that hatecrime of a YA book

As far as I can tell this is a book about a town where all women turn into demonic man hating horses every night. I'll have to report back once I learn the truth

This might be my favourite pulp sff introduction I've ever read. I love picking up a collection from 1970s and going "this perfect aligns with my sense of humour". Goddamn I wish *I* was writing the kind of nonsense I could ask a friend to over-interpret for me in an afterword!

Finished 'Needle in a Timestack' by Robert Silverberg! I liked it okay, but hard emphasis on Okay. The highlights were, perhaps unsurprisingly, the story about the lonely crab alien romance and the one about the giant bat alien (no reason in particular). But not a collection I'd recommend

I'll do a vid on what I read in 2024 when I get my voice back, in the meantime I'm reading pulp! I find reading often forgotten sff/horror works from the 60s-80s is so refreshing after my job w bad YA. You never know what you're going to get quality... concept...... startling-prejudice wise
