Plant update, they are still growing. They love the morning sunshine, when it decides to pop out.

Update on our pumpkins, I replanted them on a whim as they were running out of room in tiny pots. We lost a few flowers in the process but I walked into this beauty this morning. Who knew you could grow pumpkins in January when outside is buried under 5 feet of snow and in the negative double digits

After we removed seeds from our pumpkins last fall we counted them, used them to make art and planted some. Being November, we used a grow light and to our surprise (even after a 2 week winter break) some are still growing 😁

Part 5 of creating clothing inspired by early settlers 200 years ago. Students picked a model for their clothing and strutted down a run way. As expected the clothing fell apart, sparking some great discussion.

Why not decorate our pumpkins? My students did a great job painting a black cat, deer, monster and bear.

Once the seeds were out, my students had a hard time deciding how to count the seeds. We discussed what math tools we could use, settling on hundreds charts, ten frames and grouping by tens (skip counting).

Around pumpkin season we cut open some large pumpkins and started investigating. We scooped everything out and then estimated and counted the seeds.

We ventured outside again and collected some soil, sticks and dead leaves to create some compost buckets. We later added some food scraps and did a lot of mixing. We added water and waited for the bucket to break down the food scraps. So far, we have some decomposition.

We love a good experiment! We have been learning about soil erosion and the different horizons (layers) of soil.

Our first science unit this year was soils in the environment, so we of course had to go out into our environment to investigate.
