Libraries play a vital role in age‑friendly communities, acting as welcoming hubs that support social connection and access to services for older people. Library services often span multiple sites, each with different staff, activities and ways of working.

We know incredible prevention and home improvement work is happening in local authorities across the country but not every area is connected into a peer network to share and strengthen that work.

Our research has found that more than half (54%) of employers agree that an age-inclusive workforce would increase productivity. A multigenerational workforce can bring great benefits to an organisation.

An inaccessible and unwelcoming environment puts people at greater risk of injury or feeling unsafe or isolated.

Today we have launched our 'Age-friendly Built Environment Quick Guides. Our collection of quick guides offers a simple yet comprehensive overview of the key design considerations for ensuring age-friendliness across a range of spaces and amenities in the built environment.

Good Home Hubs provide one-stop-shop services on all aspects of home repairs and adaptations, with support and signposting on everything from finding trusted tradespeople and identifying what work needs to be done, to how to finance repairs and improve energy efficiency.

Redundancy can bring many emotions including grief, frustration and anxiety – sometimes all at the same time. In our new Age-friendly Restructure and Redundancy Toolkit, we hear from over 50s about the impact redundancy and restructures have had on them.

Cold, damp and mouldy homes have serious health consequences for millions of people across the UK today. Our Safe Homes Now spotlights series brings the consequences of unsafe homes into focus by looking at the different aspects of the crisis of poor-quality housing.

How does our experience of ageing differ based on where we live? How does our housing impact our health as we get older? How quickly is our ageing population growing?

Without more inclusive home improvement support, we risk leaving people from racially minoritised communities in homes that put their health and wellbeing at risk, says our Programme Manager, Nazia Azad.

Over the next decade diversity in sexual orientation among older people is set to increase rapidly - based on the number of older people in their forties and fifties.

Too many people from racially minoritised communities, like Madhuri, are being barred from access to home improvement which leaves them in unsafe homes that don't meet their needs.

"Nothing was in the flat, and nothing was in the kitchen, nothing. It was rotten. (My housing officer) asked the constructors, look, this kitchen, this is not good, do something for her. But it takes such a long time." Says Amtul, an older woman.

There are 11 million people aged 65 or over in England. In ten years, this will grow to more than 13 million. We have an ageing population, but there is no overall strategy to prepare for the complex social and policy challenges that this will generate.
