Without more inclusive home improvement support, we risk leaving people from racially minoritised communities in homes that put their health and wellbeing at risk, says our Programme Manager, Nazia Azad.

Over the next decade diversity in sexual orientation among older people is set to increase rapidly - based on the number of older people in their forties and fifties.

Too many people from racially minoritised communities, like Madhuri, are being barred from access to home improvement which leaves them in unsafe homes that don't meet their needs.

"Nothing was in the flat, and nothing was in the kitchen, nothing. It was rotten. (My housing officer) asked the constructors, look, this kitchen, this is not good, do something for her. But it takes such a long time." Says Amtul, an older woman.

There are 11 million people aged 65 or over in England. In ten years, this will grow to more than 13 million. We have an ageing population, but there is no overall strategy to prepare for the complex social and policy challenges that this will generate.

The government has announced increased funding to a scheme that will allow people to install adaptations such as stairlifts, ramps, accessible bathrooms and assistive technologies in their homes.

New Labour Market stats reveal that people over 50 are the most likely to be in long-term unemployment. We are calling on the Chancellor to take action in the upcoming Autumn Budget to close the employment rate age gap.

As our days get colder, its crucial to recognise that more older people are at risk of health issues from cold homes. 60% of excessively cold homes are occupied by at least one person over the age of 55.16. This is unacceptable.
