The British state has never truly apologised for our nation's role in African chattel slavery and colonialism. Today, I presented a petition calling for an unequivocal apology and an All-Party Parliamentary Commission for Truth and Reparatory Justice to address these grave crimes and their legacy.

UN Delegates just voted to recognise the Transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity. Britain abstained. The refusal to support this motion only places our country more at odds with the global majority. The call for reparatory justice is only getting louder.

Tomorrow, the United Nations will vote on Ghana's motion to recognise the Transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity. Given Britain's central role in this crime, a vote against would be a betrayal of every life consumed by enslavement and colonialism.

Essex Police have suspended the use of live facial recognition technology over evidence of bias and inaccuracy. We need a pause on the rollout of such technology and a more open conversation about whether this is the direction we want to go in as a society.

I voted against the Courts and Tribunal Bill last night. Restricting jury trials is not what victims are asking for. They want changes that are backed by evidence and will drive genuine improvements to the justice system.

Justice needs juries. Ahead of today's debate on the Courts and Tribunals Bill, I joined lawyers outside Parliament to call for the government to abandon proposals to restrict jury trials. We need investment and reform to tackle court backlogs, not the abolition of key legal safeguards.

An FOI request has revealed that UK museums hold 263,000+ items of human remains from around the world. The way these are stored and displayed shows a complete lack of respect, denying dignity in death and perpetuating colonial violence. It brings shame on our nation 🧵

Today MPs vote on new legislation to introduce votes at 16. This is a very welcome step that will give young people a say over decisions that shape their lives, strengthening participation in the democratic process. For democracy to work for everyone, it must include everyone.

The willingness to pursue military action that leaves hundreds of children dead, underlines why the world increasingly views the actions of Israel and the US as such a threat to international peace and security.

The decision to freeze the student loan repayment threshold is a one-sided breach of contractual terms. Graduates shouldn't face retrospective changes to their loan terms. Ultimately, tuition fees should be scrapped and student debts written off.

Maternal death rates are 20% higher than in 2009-11. The findings of this investigation remind us that maternity care is not working for women, babies, families, or staff. These problems are too familiar. We now need urgent action to address them.

It was a privilege to meet Amina Aliyu Adamu and Aishatu Suleiman Jahun, two women’s rights leaders from Nigeria, in Parliament on Monday. Great to hear more about the work they are doing to support women and girls to lead change in their own communities and confront gender inequality.
