There are more than 200 types of HPV. Some are harmless — but others can cause cancer. You can prevent HPV-related cancers by getting vaccinated.

Most HPV infections go away on their own. But when high-risk HPV stays in the body, it can lead to cancer. The good news: HPV vaccination can prevent most cancers caused by the virus.

HPV spreads through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity. Most people don’t know they have it. The virus causes nearly all cervical cancers and many cancers of the throat, mouth, anus, and genitals.

HPV-related cancers often develop years or even decades after infection. Vaccination protects against the HPV types responsible for most HPV-related cancers. HPV prevention today can mean fewer cancers tomorrow.
