Work of the Week! On Paul Hill, 1922 by Stanhope Forbes (1857–1947) This painting is full of optimism, with the next generation basking in Cornish sunshine, but in the far distance, the Cenotaph (completed the year this was painted) shines like a beacon to remember those lost to save such an idyll.

Today marks the birth anniversary of the remarkable Dame Laura Knight, born in 1877 in Derbyshire. Laura was known for her distinctive blend of landscapes and figures, painting bold outdoor scenes that sometimes stirred local controversy but also charmed many with her vibrant personality.

We were delighted to welcome Walter Langley's great-great-grandson, Adam, and great-great-great-grandson, Uriah, to the Gallery this week. On a visit from Australia to see family, Adam, Sandhi, and Uriah made a special journey down to Penzance to view Langley's paintings.

Work of the Week! Maroon and Gold by Ruth Simpson (1889–1964) Ruth Simpson came to Newlyn in 1911/12 to study at Stanhope Forbes’ Painting School. She met fellow artist Charles Simpson shortly after she arrived in Newlyn, and they were married in 1913.

Penlee House @penleehousegallery.bsky.social has an awesome exhibit “Birds: The art of Cornwall’s birdlife” on until October. A number of the works were by Charles Walter Simpson (1885 - 1971), who specialized in birds. His “Line fishing season” was the key work upon entry in the gallery. #envhist

Work of the Week 🖼️ Kemyl Cottage, Lamorna Valley by John Guttridge Sykes Sykes met Laura and Harold Knight when they were living in Staithes before their move to Cornwall. With the help of a patron, he moved as the Knights did to Newlyn in 1914 and remained for the rest of his life.

Throwback Thursday 📸⁠ Sheltering on Gwithian Dunes This photograph was taken for the local tourism guide and shows the head of a woman lying on the dunes, presumably at Gwithian, and the back of a little girl holding a bucket. Surrealism is unusual in this kind of commercial photograph.

The Western Union Fleet sailed into Mount's Bay on June 30th 1949. It comprised 109 ships from Britain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Altogether, there were 22,000 seamen. The fleet was formed as part of a huge peace-keeping exercise carried out in the Bay of Biscay.⁠
