Oh dear, I saw someone do a reel on Insta saying Tomorrow Never Knows is the first use of “flanging” on a Beatles recording and I fear I might have to make my own reel to, uh, clarify a few things.

Generally if any question veers toward the personal I try to make my life sound boring. That’s to spruce things up a bit, because in reality it’s even more boring than you can possibly imagine!

Quote a record that you found in your parents’ collection when you were young. I remember watching the film Fahrenheit 451 in my early teens & being spellbound by the music. I was thumbing through my dad’s records not long after and found this, which had a suite of music from the film. 1/2 ⬇️

Not sure why this story is getting so much press because these recordings have been available for decades. An engineer at Decca told me that after the Beatles became famous Dick Rowe used to play the tape for people. It later went missing & this almost certainly isn’t it.

Alex Chilton did an interview at Jazz Fest one year where he said of Big Star “We all wanted to be the Beatles but we weren’t good enough musicians.” I think a lot of people disagree with that assessment. RIP
