This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition, The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance Iconic imo

Made a couple of Earth shots for the latest PBS eons video, including the still in the thumbnail here. Represents Greenland 2 million years ago. There is a bigger Eons project which I was more heavily involved with, set to come out next spring, I believe.

I am opposed to AI products and services because of the extra power they require... IN A CLIMATE CRISIS. I am opposed to AI results - texts and illustrations - because they've been created unethically, via theft and non-consensual use of the work of others. Share if you agree.

Half a billion years ago, oceans didn’t breathe steadily, they lurched between oxygen-rich and suffocating for over 100M years. New research shows deep time holds a warning: once oxygen is lost, it takes ages to return. Our seas don’t have that time. 🌊 🧪

I've updated my Late Cretaceous (66MYA) equirectangular basemaps on my patreon store to now also include the 43K resolution variant. Previously only 20K was available. These layers project perfectly onto a 3D sphere, and are made to emulate the NASA blue marble look of the Earth.
