Mastering is done and now I am preparing to cut off my hands so that I stop fiddling with it.

I feel like F. Scott Fitzgerald over here in the mix. Supposedly this album was finished and done a week ago, and here I am rushing in last minute changes to the harmony vocals in the hours before sending it out to be pressed.

With increasing regularity, I will tell people that mandolin is my favorite instrument.

A musical approach that I like is making a very brief demonstration that you could do something if you wanted to, and then backing off and doing something else instead.

So the album is mixed and mastered. Now what?

Normalize not playing solos in Bluegrass songs.

I’m far more interested in the rhythms of Bluegrass than in the virtuosic solos of Bluegrass. On this new recording, I feel like the Lou Reed of Bluegrass.

Finished up the last bits of the mix this evening.

The only truth I know about recording music is that if you make enough mistakes, you will finally wind up with an album.

Done recording and mixing.

Finishing up the new recordings today. A bit of harmony vocals and that’s about it. Now need a title for the album. Songs about baseball, immigrant grandparents, death and the afterlife, friendship, rowdiness, classic movie monsters.

Spending some quality time with my mandolin.

Working on some light overdubs (a few breaks and a mandolin bit that I didn’t have time to record yesterday). Then it’s on to harmony vocals and we’re done.

Eight songs have made the final cut. Total length 21 minutes. That doesn’t seem like a lot of time. But there is a lot happening in those 21 minutes.

Break time. Got eight songs recorded. Now it’s dinner time and back in 90 mins to do the raw mix.

Alright, time to record some Bluegrass.
