A moment of near invisibility. This woodcock was filmed on a camera trap in Cornwall. There are points where the crown and eye line almost disappear into the leaf litter. The camouflage is extraordinary and isn’t just a nice adaptation – it’s essential for not being noticed.

Dead wood is not waste. It is habitat. As trunks and branches decay, they provide food, shelter and breeding space for hundreds of species – fungi, beetles, birds, mammals and amphibians.

A short camera trap moment of a water vole from one of my reintroduction sites. The raft is there for monitoring, they like to eat on them as you can see my all the remnants!

Filmed at night under infrared light in Cornwall. A nice roe deer interaction one of the camera traps. An older buck gently asserting himself over a younger one. This is way too early in the year for rutting, so more likely just establishing a hierarchy for use of resources.

Another non-target species on the camera traps whilst monitoring for water voles and American mink - this time a roe deer buck. Bucks rub their foreheads and antlers on trees to mark their territory with scent from glands on their heads.

More camera trap footage of the Cornish otter family from last year. Mum and one of the siblings seem very cautious and aware to the threat of danger, whilst the other sibling is somewhat more relaxed!

Some nice camera trap footage of one of our reintroduced water voles from last year. You can see how the vegetation in the water has been grazed on. We often find them using waterside willows branches like this to preen and also to eat on, diving into the water if they sense danger.
