A whimbrel, the smaller relative of a curlew with an unmistakeable call. We encountered them all over Shetland but usually with a rod in hand rather than the camera. This one was circling me as I walked back from the coast - it clearly had a nest or young nearby. #whimbrel #shetland

The Shetland wren, a subspecies of the Eurasian wren, distinguished by its darker and more red-brown colouring and it is more heavily barred. The bill is stouter and longer and it has stronger legs. It inhabits cliffs and rocky shores, where this was taken as it flitted about under the rocks.
