Bristly Black Currant has edible berries, but the whole plant is covered with sharp spines, making them somewhat difficult to harvest. Some people get an allergic reaction from contact with the spines! The reddish flowers develop into black to dark-purple berries by mid-summer. #WildflowerWednesday

Recently our palaeontology team took a collecting trip to the Cat Head site, in collaboration with Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation. Once nearly extinct, the trumpeter swan is again a frequent sight in southern Manitoba. Due to commercial exploitation, subsistence hunting, and sport hunting it had disappeared from most of Canada, but protection measures and breeding and release programs allowed for this remarkable recovery!

Collected from the same formation, why are these fossil slabs such different colours? Areas of the formation were exposed to significant heat by a burning coal seam in the distant past. With the ground acting as a kiln, the clay baked like pottery, turning parts of it terracotta red! #FossilFriday

This Burgon & Ball axe head dates to 1750-1800 and was manufactured in the United Kingdom. The company supplied goods to the North West Company in the late 18th, early 19th centuries. The three crowns on the axe may indicate that they were a purveyor of goods to the British monarch at the time.

Found in the prairies of Manitoba, Lambert’s Locoweed grows 6-18 pink-purple flowers on a hairy, leafless stem. The leaves of this plant are also hairy. It is named “locoweed” because it produces toxic chemicals that cause strange behaviours in cattle who fed on it. #WildflowerWednesday

Growing in woodlands, the Veiny Vetchling has lavender to blue-purple petals with dark veins on the top petal. In contrast, the lower petals are often pale pink to nearly white. It grows a branched tendril atop each compound leaf, helping it climb surrounding vegetation. #WildflowerWednesday

The Marsh Vetchling, as suggested by its name, grows in moist meadows and wetlands. The colour of its petals ranges from a deep pink to purple or blue, and it’s not uncommon to see the flowers growing two-toned; either purple and white, or purple and blue. #WildflowerWednesday

Canada Milk-vetch is one of Canada's more common species of Milk-vetch. Growing up to 1.2 m tall, its flowering stalks have up to 100 white-green flowers, which attract pollinators. Canada Milk-vetch fixes nitrogen in the soil, which is a crucial macronutrient for plants! #WildflowerWednesday

A rare find in Manitoba, Aboriginal Milk-vetch has white, pea-like flowers with a purple tip, and deep red pods. It grows in meadows and gravelly or stony areas. This plant was gathered by some Indigenous groups, giving the plant its common name “Aboriginal Milk-vetch”. #WildflowerWednesday
