A great read on culture and how it works. Some of you will remember I had similar thoughts on the nature of culture and how it works in society.

this is what happens when you bake too many cookies. Don’t cry for me dear reader. They will be frozen but for a few days. A mere handful of seconds in the microwave will renew them to their former glory.

Went shopping at teh Autry Museum gift store followed by a Barnes and Nobel with the Pretty Wife™, and now I need to lie down with a book before I hiss and snarl at people like a poorly trained vampire. Everything was fine, nothing bad happened, I just hit my people limit and now need to be alone.

Brilliant. Consider that our individual selves, our consciousnesses, are not any more real than an LLM. The reason why their output feels so real is because they speak the same language that we whisper to ourselves.

Another Story Out In The Wild
I'm very happy to announce that another story of mine has been published. Saint Dragon and the George, can now be found in the anthology Pharmacopeia Obscura, by the good people at JayHenge Publishing. The anthology is available from Amazon in paperback, hard bound, and e-book formats. Please consider purchasing a copy. The publishers are not making a lot of money from this venture.

We live on an east west aligned street, with the front of the house facing north. For most of the year direct sunlight doesn’t shine through the front windows. Thanks to our planet’s axial tilt the sun slowly rises, relative to us, more to the north until it reaches it northern most point.

I’m cooking bacon outside and every time I step outside there’s a crow in my neighbor’s tree that keeps asking for my name. I don’t tell him because I’m not an idiot. “Give to a crow what you don’t want to see again,” as my mam used to say. Still I’m thinking of telling him my neighbor’s name.

“A pat on the shoulder, however friendly, is not an innocent, freestanding action in the light of a sexual-harassment charge.” An example of a sentence, containing a nice twist at the end, from “Making Stories” by Jerome Butler. Delicious morning reading.

The problem remains that there are more writers than there are readers. This is true even if you are only counting tradpub. There are a thousand people on the side of the road yelling and waving their signs, but it’s still the same 30 cars going by.

I realized the other day, after reading posts from a family member who is deep in the weeds, that when you strip conspiracy theories of any personal meaning, they sound exactly like the synopsis you'd find on the back of a really bad self-published thriller.

You’re Not Stupid, You’re Just in a Relationship
One of the common complaints you hear in this modern age is how our electronic devices, like smart phones, are making us more stupid. The other day this happened at a local Subway. My son and I go there every Monday, and like to visit with the nice lady behind the counter. Then last week, in the course of our normal conversation, she remarked, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

This one is easy. An electric car company that made a base that had all the major components and was easy to add various shaped body panels in top. Everything open source so it was easy to modify. If you could spin a wrench you could make your own dream car. Then sell the shapes of classic cars.

I am 63 years old and I was born in the year 1963. This little numerical trick happens once in everyone’s life, but is harder goal to reach for those born in 1999 than those born in 2001.

The Pretty Wife™ and I have been enjoying this excellent series on PBS about the Martha Graham Dance Company, which is now 100 years old. There are 2 episodes featuring interviews, BTS training, and exquisite dancing. Highly recommend. No one dances like this group.

In the summer or fall of 1990 I moved into an apartment by myself. It was my first time living alone. I needed something to cook with so I went to a sears. Somehow I ended up with these two sauce pans. I think they were the cheapest pans I could find there.

Weird human fact; we establish our relationships every time we talk to each other. It’s not just the words we use, but the level of trust involved. We reveal more to people who are closer to us. We use insider language or harsh words to indicate their place in our world.

Cities can now achieve “what was once thought impossible”: cutting air pollution by 20–45% in little more than a decade. 19 cities, including London, San Francisco and Beijing, cut levels of both PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by more than 20% since 2010.

Facing a difficult dilemma. I didn’t have any chocolate yesterday. Does that mean I should have twice as much today? To make things more complicated, my wife had too much chocolate yesterday. Does that mean we’re even? Really struggling with this adulting thing.

A reminder that the world's fastest radio controlled airplane does not have a motor. As far as I know this is faster than any drone, at least hobby level. I'm sure there are military drones that are faster. The speed is insane! This is some very bleeding edge tech.

I asked the lady as she led me into the booth, “Are you going to shoot me?” “Yes,” she said as she opened the door, “I’m going to shoot you. I did some pushups in that tiny room, with her balanced precariously above me. The floor was dirty so I did them on my knuckles. Then I rolled up my sleeve.
