Album review: Griffin - 'Begriffen' (Spread Way Out / Better Company Records) @griffinbrown_
loading . . .
Griffin
The third album by New York-based Griffin rolls into town and is certainly a pert affair. Stripped back, lots of space and spikey percussion is the name of the game here. And, it must be said, coupled with the sometimes rather introspective vocals, it's pretty successful. Occasionally, to dizzying effect. Reverb ahoy sees to the latter. It is, however, not without its flaws. What perhaps holds 'Begriffen' back a tad is that its sound could just possibly be labelled a little dated. Chonky beats, and either vocoder or serious autotune abuse on the vocals was certainly all the rage some time years ago.

Record Store Day
Days like this are important. Not just from the point of view of keeping record shops alive, but for the wider benefit that it brings to a local music scene. Having covered it before, I felt it important to go back again this year and to write about it again. Growing up in Stirlingshire there wasn't anything like this for us to go to. The main experience of being around here through your school days and beyond was being told what you can't do and the feeling that everything was set up for someone else and not for you.

Record Store Day and its attendant activity is always interesting, and nowhere more so than at Mono, where the shop (Monorail Music) flogs the product while the venue puts on some free music and DJ sets to a more "mixed" audience than the average paid gig.
