I've always loved that Roger Deakins look to a film. This makes it yet more gratifying to learn that his career is - in part at least - an extended enquiry into how many 60w domestic lightbulbs can be wired in series to light a scene (answer: so many!). 'Short Waves' sits at the centre of the Radio New Brighton EP. It's a sweep across the frequency dial of an imaginary radio, picking up ghosts of songs, pamphlets and other New Brighton ephemera, including a warning from the Mersey sirens.

coopervane.bandcamp.com/album/radio-... 'The Dips' is the closer on 'Radio New Brighton'. The 'dips' are grassy flood defence basins along the coastline. On summer evenings we'd play cricket there with grandad and uncles, all of whom have since passed away. "Beneath the wind, before the rain".

I asked Gemini for a critique of a short song lyric. It near flattered me to death. Appaz I'm Syd Barrett meets Tom Waits round the back of Lewis Carroll's. At the very least, Gem deserves an A-level.

Daniel Kehlmann's Lichtspiel (published in English as 'The Director ') is a standout read to cap 25 and set the bar for 2026. A deeply human protagonist, though thought a genius, is confused, compromised and tossed about on the waves of history, fortune, fate.

This is brilliant. Classics stuff you can actually read without feeling like you're getting sloppy seconds after a former Prime Minister.

I'm reading Tim Binding's 'Beneath the Trees of Eden' and its the strangest thing. The setting is England, late 20th C, but the characters are somehow... shamanic?... unbounded by convention, by quotidian reality. I would love to know how Tim found them, nurtured them.

This weekend marks the 6 month "anniversary"of my daily TM practice. I'm not the one to judge if I've become better/calmer/more creative (re-read with Radiohead voice). But I do know that I enjoy it every time I start that mantra.
