A vast amount of cheap—what I'd call junk—electronics are thrown away every day. If it's easy to buy, it's easy to throw away because it'll have zero resale value and no sentimental value. I'll leave something in my basket and see if I still want it in a couple of days. The answer is often "no".

I love Apple's attention to detail. They'll spend time and money on internal aesthetics that most will never see. I also love shattering that illusion whenever I can. Underneath that shiny heat spreader, the M4 SoC looks decidedly un-Apple like in that puddle of bland green.

About $3. That's the absolute max Samsung saved by cutting BT from the S Pen. The real savings are probably far less, these are very rough back of napkin calcs. Based on S24 Ultra sales of 16.8m units to date, that would net them $50m in savings.

Here's one last comparison with Apple Vision Pro (AVP) since I already have the data. The scale at the bottom shows how many pixels can fit across 50 μm. Because of how close these screens are to the eyes, the only meaningful measure of screen quality in VR is Pixels Per Degree (PPD).

VR display panels are fascinating. Thanks to Evident Scientific, we can see how these panels evolve as technologies mature. This is what you'd see if you directly compared the LCD panels from the Quest 2, Quest 3, and the new Quest 3S.

Turns out the Quest 3S shares a fair bit of hardware with the Quest 2. That's a good thing, it means more spare parts to service both HMDs. I had to tap @sadlyitsbradley.bsky.social for some help on the LCD panels though. While cross compatible, the subpixel layout was different.
