Disappeared for a bit because I was getting ready for an informal interview about becoming an employee at Valve. Long story short, I would fail the formal interview and I have a laundry list of things to work on before trying again. I'm pretty excited about having tangible actions.

I decided to go AWOL from all forms of online social platforms in December. Went great, played a bunch of games, did family stuff, conquered Mars. Back to making games.

Who doesn’t like frogs? Because the number of frog in Dota 2 just increased. Know what else increased? My frog association. Battletoads, Punk Frogs, and now frog bard Largo.

My clients are convinced to continue hiring me for SpongeBob games. And I’m here for it. It’s a wild thing to work with actors I grew up listening to.

I got a bunch of posters back when I first started on Dota 2 from Valve. It only took a couple years to hang them up.

teamLabs is very easy to get lost in. These are a few shots while I was lost. I wish I’d filmed more in Japan. Editing and color grading is actually pretty fun.

Of the loot I acquired from a recent Japan trip, I think picking up The Great Gatsby in Japanese was very off the cuff. It’s also the 100 year anniversary edition.

Curry craving follows me back from Japan all the time. Thinking about making Soba too.

I think about Musashi’s life sometimes. Be the best at something, retire to a mountain, write a book, don’t explain anything. Maybe. Minus the duels to the death. Might be doing a road trip with local friends the next time I’m in Japan.

The past three years of games have covered a wide gamut of emotional and character arcs set in a variety of worlds. Playing games reminds me of why I even got into game dev in the first place.

More scripts. These ones help me stay organized and deliver game ready dialogue to spec. Only took me three tries to make the social media version of these videos have an actual thumbnail.

Previously I talked about an auto renaming tool I made for Reaper. The region creator is how that auto-renamer can work in the first place. And for those that didn’t know: video game scripts are largely written in Excel. Everyone’s favorite characters are spreadsheets.

Labbing my Reaper scripts in a test session is only half the equation. At some point, I had to test them on a commercial session. Because I found some bugs and logic errors I made.

I got Mario Golf on sale. First two hours: time to make Miis of characters I work with instead of golfing. Good start for now.

I made an Auto Renamer tool in Reaper. It takes regions (that have the filenames the file itself must have from another script I will talk about later) and forces the file to have that filename in the session.

On a finishing trajectory for Arceus. Currently: a Munchlax eludes me. I found a Snorlax way earlier.

I watched streamers discover for the first time Meet the Team for Team Fortress 2 today. Time comes for us all.

Apparently what I do between projects is to think mostly about how to do those projects better. One thing I've learned recently with programming is to be a bit more judicial with descriptive constants so I'm not leaving magic numbers all over the place. I decided to listen to that advice.

Fantastic portrayal of Mr. Terrific in Superman. Felt like I was watching a long episode of Justice League Animated.

It is surreal regularly working with Tom and Bill on SpongeBob games. I watched the show when I was a kid. I do wish I'd been able to work with Kevin Conroy at least once on a project. He'll always be Batman to me.

Sound editing comes with a lot of problems that need solving. Letting the computer solve some of that for me is how I can be motivated to look for the fifth to last selected take 800 lines into an editing day. Scripting is how I let the computer handle the mundane details so I can focus on editing.

One thing I tend to struggle with in Unreal is tracking data flow. Conceptually, I understand being able to watch for booleans/variables that are in other cpp or Blueprint classes and such. Getting a player weapon to make a sound sometimes takes a bit of wrenching.

Been awhile since I last talked about anything in my world. Just been learning Wwise a step at a time. I figured out the LFE workflow for surround mixes (which you can’t hear on mobile). Been doing a lot of mixing lately otherwise.

I was today years old when I discovered sushi pies exist.

Went to Anime Wonder and had good chats with people I know there and walked up a mountain that is also an arboretum. I successfully made it out of the studio today.

My brother only slightly nudged me. But it looks like I’ve got a Saturday day trip and maybe catch up with some folks I know there. Because on Sunday my family wants me to grill food for them.

For a twenty year old keyboard, this thing still feels great (after a cleaning). Sucks that the spacebar is a see-saw though. Until I find a solution that doesn’t involve super glue/melting plastic, I have tape to help me feel the actuation range.

I tend to read more than I write.

Finally hooked up a cheap and crappy cassette deck I got awhile back to see what it does with recording. What it does is kill high frequencies. Looks like I’ll need to exaggerate the high end when recording into cassette.

What’s the strategy when you live in a neighborhood of chatty dogs and people who like flying aircraft? And you want to record? Be louder. More seriously, three trombone part recording is fun. I need to work on my intonation.

Always wanted to do more FM synthesis. Zebra is getting me to do that. Coolio.

Digging into a new synthesizer is kinda like reading a new book. When you already know that most synthesizers are a sound generator, filter, and amplifier, you can spend your time learning the specific quirks instead.

If you play a wind instrument you know you gotta warm up your chops before seriously playing. Audio engineers gotta warm up their ears too. I warm up by listening to music gradually increasing the volume until it's at working level.

My birthday (which isn’t today) ended being very Persona themed. Surprised my brother could find Joker merch.

Ahoy! I'm George. Audio Sorcerer frequently working on games/movies/animations. If you play Dota, my job is to make character voices sound even more good. Also really like your shirt. Got to see Troy Baker sing a Bioshock Infinite song at the GDC concert last year. I am also not at GDC.

When I go quiet, it's usually cause I'm dug in and working. It's become a sort of comfort zone to ignore the world and do the thing. Hard to believe just six years ago I had to dig in and learn how to talk to people just to get my foot in the door. Had to learn some vulnerability and resilience.

The amount of times characters tell each other to get their shit together in FF7 Rebirth is really entertaining for me. The English localizers had a lot of fun with the script making the dialogue really organic.

Voice actors always come up with very convincing KO/Dying sounds. I've always wondered where that gets pulled from to be be convincing without literally choking themselves out mid-session? Monster voice actors too. I've heard some very monstrous things come out of humans very convincingly.

Four hours at the dealership and I’ve reread The Dip. Now I’m rereading Atomic Habits. Somehow car maintenance reminded me to slow down and remind myself of a few things I forgot.
