loading . . . Indonesia: Peasantsโ Union (SPI) Condemns U.S. Military Aggression Against Venezuela as a Serious Threat to Global Sovereignty The Indonesian Peasants Union (Serikat Petani Indonesia / SPI) strongly condemns the military aggression carried out by the United States against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which culminated in the kidnapping of President Nicolรกs Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on January 3, 2026. This act constitutes a grave violation of national sovereignty and international law, and sets a dangerous precedent for the global order, particularly for countries of the Global South. SPI affirms that the Venezuelan people have the right to self-determination, including deciding their development path and political orientation without foreign interference.
> **This is a dangerous precedent of what we call โ _imperialism without a mask_** _โ_. When a country seeks to defend its political sovereignty, natural resources, and food sovereignty, its leader is criminalized and stripped of legitimacy.

> Henry Saragih, Chairperson of SPI
SPI expresses deep concern over the repeated violations of international law and the interference of imperialist powers in the democratic life of nations. Over the past six months, the administration of Donald Trump has conducted a unilateral campaign of intimidation against Venezuela, including political, economic, and military pressure. This campaign culminated in an illegal military attack accompanied by the kidnapping of a sovereign head of state. Such actions not only violate international law but also negate the principle that Latin America and the Caribbean are zones of peace, not theaters of war.
**As a peasant organization, SPI emphasizes that peasants and rural workers are often the primary victims of imperialist aggression** , which leads to land grabbing, the expansion of mining and energy projects by U.S. multinational corporations, and the plundering of energy resources. In the case of Venezuela, Trump has not even attempted to conceal that the primary motivation behind the attack is the seizure of the Bolivarian Republicโs oil reserves.
SPI also highlights that the policies of President Nicolรกs Maduro, which continue the legacy of Hugo Chรกvez in defending the nationalizing of natural resources and breaking economic dependency. These are not criminal acts but practices that have been undertaken by many sovereign nations. Similar policies were implemented in Indonesia under the leadership of Soekarno, as mandated by Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.
In the context of global geopolitics, SPI observes a recurring pattern: U.S. dominance in the Middle East through Israel, interventions in Latin America through regimes such as Pinochet in Chile and Batista in Cuba, and control over Venezuela prior to the Chรกvez era. The kidnapping of Venezuelaโs president confirms that these old imperial practices continue to be reproduced in increasingly brutal forms.
> **If such practices are allowed to continue, then no Global South country is truly safe**. This attack severely damages international norms, as moral boundaries have been erased and anything can happen. Today it is Venezuela; tomorrow it could be another country. Therefore, we firmly reject all forms of intervention, kidnapping, and political criminalization under any pretext.

In accordance with the Indonesian Constitution, which states that independence is the right of all nations and that colonialism must be abolished because it contradicts humanity and justice, SPI rejects all forms of colonialism and imperialism in any guise. SPI calls on peasant organizations, allied movements, and peoples of the world to organize actions condemning this imperialist aggression and to strengthen international solidarity.
