We’re proud of our high school students who volunteered as poll workers on Election Day! Their initiative and civic engagement make a real difference in our community.

Students kicked off a new unit on disabilities by exploring how people with disabilities were treated from ancient times to the 19th century. After researching their eras, they became “Town Criers,” sharing what they learned and reflecting on fairness, inclusion, and progress.

Rainy mornings are for cozy stories! 🌧️ 📚 Students each chose their favorite ASL storybooks to view this morning, a perfect way to start the day. 💙💛

Checkmate! ♟️ Our young thinkers are learning focus, strategy, and patience through chess. We can’t wait to see some of them representing HMS on the high school chess team one day!

Our students are becoming experts at editing and expanding their narrative writing to include details, including describing words, where, when, why and how. We even have a chapter book author among us!

Our Multiple Access Points Program (MAPP) is on full display here as ASL specialists work with our special education students! MAPP is key to our commitment to inclusive education, focusing on developing essential life skills, self-advocacy, and vocational competencies.

📚 We’re thrilled to return to Battle of the Books, Gallaudet University’s Youth Programs reading competition that inspires literacy for deaf and hard of hearing students in grades 5–8. It’s been a few years since we’ve participated, and this team can’t wait to dive back in!

We took a wonderful trip into the Charlestown community to visit the @bpl.boston.gov! 📍 Students successfully led the navigation using their map skills and teamwork, and they all applied for new library cards! We love connecting learning with our local community. See you soon, BPL!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and our partners at Hands United Organization! We love sharing their resources for families with Deaf and hard of hearing youth. Hands United provides vital resources in Spanish to ensure every family has the tools they need to thrive. handsunitedor.org

The wild came to HMS again this year! 🦅 Our middle schoolers loved learning from Jack Banagis of New England Wildlife Center & meeting some of their incredible rescue animals. We're so grateful for our continued partnership w/ NEWC & the amazing work they do for local wildlife.

We were honored to host Sara Nović, Deaf author of "True Biz!" She shared amazing insights into the challenges of writing a book and offered great advice for our future authors. By highlighting Deaf Gain, she showed students that their unique experiences are powerful strengths.

Our Ss' thirst for knowledge is truly inspiring! They seamlessly transitioned from intensive study of 1 major global region to the next. They're developing authentic research skills & critical thinking as they investigate diverse geographies & cultures. The power of high-level elementary inquiry!

Our PreK-12+ school offers an opportunity for community growth. Older Ss gain valuable experience & learn the joy of mentorship while younger Ss look up to them, building a strong sense of community. Every @hmsdeaf1869.bsky.social Ss contributes to a culture of shared learning & mutual respect.

This #deafawarenessmonth, we're proud to share how our elementary CORE curriculum puts our commitment into action every day. Our CORE program is a Deaf-centric approach to learning. Students gain skills in Bilingual Language Arts, Social Studies, Deaf Studies, and more! 📚

What does reading look like when the text is a video? Our students are analyzing just that, comparing the behaviors of reading a book versus viewing an ASL story. We're broadening our definition of "text" and exploring the rich world of visual literacy. So proud of our young learners!
