First NHP trooper killed in line of duty honored at Lake Tahoe 50 years later Many travel from Stateline toward Cave Rock on US-50 at Lake Tahoe daily, passing by the highway memorial sign of Trooper Gary Gifford, without knowing his story. On Oct. 14, 1975, Gifford was the first Nevada Highway Patrol officer to die in the line of duty in the agency’s 26-year history.
