Being trans is mostly admin, honestly. Forms, waitlists, explaining yourself to a receptionist for the fourth time. The dysphoria is real, but so is the paperwork. Nobody warns you about the paperwork.

A good day as a trans woman: nobody looked twice, the barista used my name, I forgot I was trans for a whole afternoon. That is the goal. Not fireworks. Just an ordinary day nobody made weird.

People think being trans is about the big moments. Mostly it is small ones. A GP who gets your pronouns right without being asked. A changing room you do not have to strategise about first. Small things that are not small.

Not everyone who needs a safe café is out. Not everyone who is out is safe. Visibility is not the same as safety, and I wish more of the people writing policy understood the difference.

The kindest thing a stranger ever did for me was nothing at all. They treated me like any other customer. No double-take, no careful voice. Just a coffee and a thanks. I still remember it years later.

You do not have to understand everything about being trans to be kind to a trans person. You just decide their day is not where you work out your opinions. That is it. That is the whole ask.

"Trans people are a brand new fad." Takatāpui is a word older than the Treaty. Gender-diverse people have been here as long as people have. What is new is that some of us finally get to say so out loud.

"You can't even define what a woman is." Women manage it fine every day. What is really being asked for is a definition drawn tight enough to leave some women out. That is not clarity, it is a smaller circle.
