🦈 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐤 (𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒖𝒔) These small sharks can be found in the Atlantic ocean, along the coast of the american continent, from the north of North Carolina until the south of Brazil! (📸 NOAA)

🦈 𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐰𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐤 (𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒑𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒖𝒔 𝒋𝒂𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒔) There are eight species of sawsharks, forming the Pristiophoriformes order. They're known for their long rostrums with small, sharp teeth on the edges, resembling a saw! The japanese sawshark can reach up to 1.36m (4' 6") of lenght! (📸 Daiju Azuma)

🦈 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝙃𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙞) The juvenile sharks of this species live in different areas from the adults, preferring rocky reefs and algal beds, moving to deeper waters with sandy bottoms once they grow up! (📸 Cymothoa exigua)

🦈 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙨 𝙥𝙡𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙪𝙨) One of the biggest species of costal sharks, their prefer sandy or muddy areas (hence the name). With a short snout and a big triangular dorsal fin, they swim around the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, as well as the Mediterranean sea! (📸 Heather Paul)

🦈 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙨𝙪𝙨 𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙨) These amazing creatures have the longest lifespan of all known vertebrates! Since they live in remote waters (North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans) not much is known about them, but they're estimated to live up to between 250 and 500 years! (📸 Hemming1952)

🦈 𝗔 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗿𝗮𝘆? While there are lots of "shark looking" rays, there's also a genus of "ray looking" sharks: the 𝘚𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘢! Known as angel sharks, it's the single living genus of its family and order, containing 26 species. Here's a Pacific Angelshark (𝘚𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢)! (📸 alwayslaurenj)

🦈 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝗜𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘂𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀) Also called cigar sharks, these deep-sea animals are quite rarely seen. They're most noticeable for the round bite marks they leave behind in other creatures, and for glowing in the dark! Here's one captured on video ⬇️ youtu.be/5noWzTJJdpE?...

🦈 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙜𝙡𝙖𝙪𝙘𝙖) Blue sharks are a migratory species, being found in both temperate and tropical waters. They are viviparous, meaning they don't produce eggs, and can have up 100 pups in a single litter! (📸 出羽雀台 ; Josh Krancer)

🦈 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝙄𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙪𝙨 𝙤𝙭𝙮𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙪𝙨) Mako sharks are known for their extraordinary speeds, with the shortfin mako being the fastest known shark species, reaching up to 46 mph! (📸 出羽雀台)

🦈 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝙂𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙮𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙖 𝙘𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙢) Nurse sharks are oportunistic hunters who feed by suctioning prey like stingrays and crustracean into their mouths. They have one of the biggest recorded suction forces of any aquatic vertebrate! (📸 Gary Rinaldi)

Correction: they do have eyelids, however, they don't close completely like ours. Some species have nictating membranes for extra protection, but that's not the case with great whites. I apologize for the mistake!!

🦈 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙤𝙣 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙨) Did you know sharks don't have eyelids? Some species, like the great white, rely a lot on their vision for hunting, so they came up with a unique way to protect these organs: they roll their eyes back into their skulls before attacking! (📸 Elias Levy)

🦈 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙖𝙪𝙧𝙪𝙨) Despite their name, this species is not related to the tiger shark (𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘰 𝘤𝘶𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘳). These sharks have dark, reddish-brown spots on their backs, and the unique ability to swallow air from their surface to help them float! (📸 Leszek Leszczynski)

🦈 𝗣𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝘼𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙨) There are three known species of thresher sharks, all within the 𝘈𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘢𝘴 genus (from the greek alṓpēx, fox), and they all have in common long tails which are used to stun prey! (📸 by Klaus Stiefel)

🦈 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝘾𝙚𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙭𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙨) This is the second largest living fish species, only behind the whale shark. They are filter feeders, slow swimmers and also a migratory species, being found in temperate oceans all around the world! (📸 by Greg Skomal)

🦈 𝗔 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝙍𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙙𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙮𝙥𝙪𝙨) 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝗯𝘆 The whale shark is the only specimen in the 𝘙𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘯 genus and the only non-extinct member of the Rhicodontidae family. It's also one of the only 3 filter-feeding shark species! (📹 by Vlad Karpinsky)

🦈 𝗭𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙖 𝙩𝙞𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙢) This is another species of carpet shark, and is the sole member of the Stegostomatidae family. Some people also call them leopard sharks, but be careful to not mistake them for the 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘢, already posted on this profile! (📸 by Anton Lindström)

Did you know there are only 8 species of bears? The fact there are more hammerhead shark species is just wild to me.

🦈 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙖) These small sharks tend to stay their entire lives in the same area, leading to considerable genetic variations between groups! (📸 by Brian Gratwicke)

🦈 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 (𝙎𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙧𝙣𝙖 𝙡𝙚𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙞) There are 9 different hammerhead species, which make the family Sphyrnidae (sphyrna is a Greek word that means "hammer"). Their eyes might look silly, but it also gives them a better depht perception than other sharks! (📸 by Vlad Karpinsky)
