There’s a chance the Ohio Supreme Court is going to decide when parties can avoid constitutional avoidance by presenting only the constitutional issue and not briefing an obvious statutory argument. Yay, nay, or something else, this will be decided at least a couple weeks before the New Year.

Here in Columbus, a kid who hasn’t been part of paid youth sports is unlikely to make it onto some of their *middle school* athletic teams, which then keeps them from being good enough for high school teams.

Sometimes, lawyers and judges need primers on what it takes for a statute to be effective. Here, the question assumes they mere passage by the legislature is enough. But too many judges and lawyers seem to think judicial interpretation is needed before a statute is effective.

I took this bizarro bike boulevard yesterday. It’s a sleepy street, so it might work. Pavement markings at the entrance and in the middle of block clearly show the city means it to be two-way, so the exception-less do-not-enter sign is out of place.

This thread shows how criminal defense attorneys, who skew liberal/progressive as a group, generally have much more libertarian views of gun rights than other people from center to progressive. Note the words “skew” and “generally.” The opinion is far from universal.

Good for Governor DeWine. Ironically, one thing that can be a pain for poll workers is voting. Most poll workers don’t work their own precincts, so we pretty much have to vote early. Requiring a copy of front & back of license (in addition to a DL# or 4 digits of SS#) would be a meaningless barrier.

People both happy and unhappy with yesterday’s NY primary results should remember that the Democratic party is stronger when it has a broader coalition of members. Primaries are the way we decide who gets to run for what seats, and we can’t afford to purge moderate liberals or strong progressives.

I don’t understand this response from the City. If Summit is 1-way (south), why do they have the pavement markings showing where a north-bound cyclist should be? Are they saying cyclists can’t follow the pavement markings? Or that the “except bicycles” sign isn’t needed because it’s 1-way for cars?

The First Amendment at work: A coffee shop employee was kind when a 7-year-old needed to use the restroom. The coffee shop owner told a politician/customer whose views she abhorred to not come back. The politician/customer thanked the employee for her kindness & didn’t argue further w/ the owner.

Here’s one big political problem for the district. The Board had been studying and discussing changes for a decade. They keep coming close to a decision before backing off. There’s no way to know when they’ll finally get serious, and no one can keep sustained attention for a decade.

Columbus City Schools has a hard problem: 1) it has far more space than students 2) many buildings are old & falling apart 3) the emptiest buildings are in disadvantaged parts of town 4) nearly all neighborhood schools with new buildings are in disadvantaged parts of town.

This was probably a difficult decision for Columbus’s Pride Parade organizers, but there are definite advantages to having local law enforcement be visibly supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. (I’m not criticizing other organizers who have made different decisions for their Pride celebrations.)

This is weird. I hope it’s just Step 1 for something else, but the City of Columbus has added an extremely short 2-way bike lane leading into a one-way street. This is Summit & Hudson. Am I missing something? There’s no sign exempting cyclists from the Do Not Enter sign.

I have a wild idea. When we have factual disputes about possible misconduct by government officials, we pick a small group of random citizens, maybe 12, tell them what the rules are, and ask them to listen to the evidence and make a decision about who’s right.

I took the not-quite-finished Fourth Street bike lane today. I had to use parallel alleys frequently, but much was available. One consequence of keeping the bike lane between parking and the curb is that the frequent bump outs kinda create the feeling of the back and forth of being on a boat.

While looking for cat photos, I found this meme that I created to put in a PTA newsletter. I think I wrote a pretty good newsletter with enough corny jokes to make people laugh, even if it was at me. But I thought this went too far.

Bike ≠ Bus. I misinformed 45 people on my after-work bike ride, which included an errand. Just before starting, I checked to see how long the bus would take, but I didn’t close the Transit App, & as I basically followed the bus’s route, the app created a phantom bus for other people to wait for.

If former Chief Justice Maureen O’Conner, who was R through her decades-long career, were eligible to run again and did so, I bet she’d be challenged for not being a “real” Republican, she’d lose the challenge by a 2-3 vote with both Ds voting to keep her on and the 3 Rs voting to kick her off.

FWIW, Ohio has a procedure for challenging the sincerity of a candidate’s party declaration, so a party can sometimes keep someone off the primary ballot for not being Republican or Democratic enough.
