I will always be grateful that I learned how to lead in Congress with fortitude, poise, and grit from Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi. She is the most accomplished Speaker of our generation and many young girls including me knew that we could be a leader because of her.

I joined the San Diego Food Bank for an emergency food distribution for federal workers, military families, and everyone needing some extra help right now. It shouldn’t take a court order to force the Trump Administration to do the right thing and even partially fund SNAP.

Republicans just tied the record for the longest U.S. government shutdown in history because they refuse to extend lifesaving ACA premium tax credits for millions of Americans like Stacy Cox.

Hint: If it takes a court order to force you to not let 40 million people starve, then you’re the villain of the story.

Undocumented immigrants are not and have never been eligible for federal SNAP benefits. So when Republicans cut $186 billion from SNAP and when they slow-roll funding for SNAP, they’re hurting American citizens only.

The numbers don’t lie. San Diegans (and people across the country) will pay thousands of dollars more per year for health insurance unless Republicans join Democrats in Congress to extend the ACA premium tax credits. Open enrollment for 2026 has started. We need action NOW.

Don’t take it from me, listen to Snopes! Speaker Johnson signed a bill to cut $186 billion from SNAP. And again, it’s HIS party that won’t help millions of Americans put food on the table this month.

The truth is that health insurance costs are about to DOUBLE for millions of Americans. That’s a HUGE issue. It doesn’t have to be this way. Democrats have a plan to keep these costs down. Republicans need to get on board.

Open enrollment for ACA marketplace health insurance plans starts today. Millions of people are about to realize (if they haven't already) that their premiums are going to cost WAY more in 2026 because Republicans are refusing to renew critical tax credits. This is a crisis.

Republicans would rather stop SNAP than pass a bill that allows millions of people to afford health care and reopens the government. Democrats are fighting for your health, your food, your dignity, and your rights. Republicans want to take it all away. We deserve better.

To be clear, Democrats in Congress want to: - Lower health care costs - Pay our service members - Fund SNAP, WIC, and Head Start - End the shutdown But Republicans think that’s ridiculous and are refusing to negotiate. Does that list seem ridiculous to you?

The lawyers and intelligence professionals didn't even show up to the House Armed Services Committee briefing today on the U.S strikes on Venezuela. I didn't hear anything to prove otherwise – these strikes are illegal. They are murder. And they should stop immediately.

Over 130 Head Start programs serving about 60,000 children will close on November 1st because of insufficient funding. Children will lose access to care, early learning, nutrition, and stability – all because Republicans in Congress are too proud to negotiate with Democrats.

A timely reminder that every dollar in SNAP benefits spent generates about $1.50 in economic activity. So when Trump fails to use USDA’s contingency dollars to keep SNAP benefits going, 40 million Americans will go hungry AND our economy will lose out on billions in activity.

We don’t know if Donald Trump promised anything to his billionaire buddy in exchange for this donation and it’s $6.37 BILLION short of what we actually need to pay our service members. I have a better idea: end the shutdown.

If 40 million people go hungry, that’s because it’s Donald Trump’s choice. The USDA can and should use contingency reserve dollars and all legal authority to fund SNAP during this government shutdown. If they don’t, that’s on Trump.

Almost 400,000 people in San Diego County alone receive Cal-Fresh (aka SNAP) benefits every month to afford food. Now, because Republicans in Congress are refusing to reopen the government, November benefits will likely be delayed.

ICE just denied our congressional oversight visit to the basement of the courthouse in San Diego today. But we’re not going to stop showing up and asking questions — because it’s our job.

I met with San Diego County superintendents and administrators to talk about how federal immigration enforcement near schools is hurting students’ mental health and academic performance and putting enormous pressure on families, teachers, and staff. ICE is making us less safe.

Promises made, promises broken (again and again). Trump has done nothing but drive up the costs of everyday goods with his tariffs and the complete chaos of his administration – and Americans are literally paying the price.

I just met with local health care providers who confirmed: if Republicans let ACA premium tax credits expire, thousands of San Diegans will see HUGE increases in their health insurance costs and be forced to decide between medical treatment and rent. We can’t let that happen.

I was glad to meet with local nonprofit partners – including ASYMCA, SDMAC, STEP, Zero8Hundred, and Feeding San Diego – to discuss the impacts of the government shutdown on our service members and their families and how these organizations are stepping up to provide support.

It’s Day 16. Here’s the situation: Democrats are fighting to lower health care costs for millions of Americans; House Republicans are fighting for the sake of fighting (and to block the Epstein Files…) They still won’t negotiate. They won’t return to DC to vote. They’re MIA.

ICE isn’t going after criminals. They went after and deported the father of a U.S. Marine.

THIS is how you fight fascism: refuse to give in, refuse to play a role in state censorship, and refuse to give your leaders a free pass when your job is holding them accountable. I’m proud to see nearly every media outlet reject this loyalty test.

Shutdown Day 15: Speaker Mike Johnson is STILL refusing to bring back House Republicans to Congress and negotiate to protect health care for Americans and reopen the government.

This isn’t business-as-usual military action – it’s murder. There was no public evidence, no due process, and no legal justification. Thoughtless action like this is how we wind up in endless wars and how our service members become targets. This is beyond shameful.
