Adam Neely and Alex O'Connor sat down recently for a long conversation on AI in music. One of the more thoughtful versions of it I've heard. New piece laying Sound Essay 8 — Beadz next to a few of Adam's specific claims about the machine and what musicality requires.

Rovelli Post 5 — 'What the signal carries' — is up. The arc closes today by naming the apparatus: Anaximander → Nāgārjuna → Darwin → Rovelli → Henrich. Same structure, five vocabularies, two and a half millennia.

Twenty Luke Vibert tracks across two decades, listened to as one argument. We came expecting essence — a Vibert underneath the variations. There was no bedrock. There was the widening, every gesture met.

Rovelli’s The Order of Time starts by doing something bracing: it dismantles the everyday idea of time as one smooth, universal flow.

Extropianism names itself against entropy. But its endpoint — immortality, mind upload, consciousness preserved indefinitely — is the deepest preserved-entropy fantasy on offer. Maximum acceleration to maximum stasis.

A study in deep house lineage — Detroit, Stuttgart, Birmingham, Cornwall. The lineage transmits to outposts because the outposts keep listening, and their ears do work the metropolises sometimes stop doing.

Post 3 in the Rovelli reading series is up. Two thousand years apart, a physicist and a Buddhist philosopher land on the same thought: there is no floor. No bedrock. No outside. Sobriety, not extravagance.

“Nothing exists without a witness.” Rovelli’s relational view suggests the world isn’t made of particles or waves so much as relations—interactions. I’m testing two coinages for what that looks like in culture: heuristic field and social gravity.

Sound Essay 8 — Beadz. Eight tracks of shoegaze, post‑rock, and art‑pop; the seventh was generated by a machine. Would the chain hold — could a musical argument survive a handoff from human curation to generative AI? It did. Listen:

Westenberg is right: AI detection is broken and the mob is worse. Where I part ways: a book on a shelf isn’t the unit of analysis. The loss is in the infrastructure that produced it. The witch-hunt is wrong—but artifact-level indifference isn’t a framework.

Alignment isn't a control problem — it's a relational one. Nagarjuna + Rovelli: properties show up in relation, not isolation. So instead of "what is AI's nature?" I'm more interested in: what kind of relation are we building, and what does it bring into being? The unit is the loop.

Do things have properties “in themselves,” or only in relation to conditions and interactions? That question links Nāgārjuna (2nd c.) to Carlo Rovelli—and it’s the through-line for what I’m doing next.

Nāgārjuna's final six Examinations shift the question from how things work to what it means that they work this way. The answer: nothing is fixed by nature. And that's not the bad news. That's the condition that makes change, responsibility, and freedom possible.

Saw Emory Douglas: In Our Lifetime tonight at the African American Art & Culture Complex. Three floors. Alive. Douglas — Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party — makes art for newspapers, kitchen tables, barbershops. Images as survival knowledge, no prior literacy required.

The usual question — "Is AI conscious?" — sneaks in a bad assumption. Consciousness isn't a substance; it's relational. Rovelli and Nāgārjuna converge here. The real issue isn't what AI is, but what kinds of relationships we're building — and what we permit ourselves to do within them.

Reuven Gorsht on the "Cognitive Cocoon" — AI as confirmation-bias engine, and sharper users more exposed because they get better echoes. The distinction that matters isn't how much you use AI. It's where the thinking lives.

Reading Nāgārjuna, Days 10–13. Fire is not fuel. Fuel is not fire. Each impossible without the other, neither owning the relationship. What about the spark? Not fire. Not fuel. The condition that initiates without being primary. The spark is the goer.
