The past few weeks have been CRAZY, but I should share some of the highlights. :-)

Many of my French-speaking students call database joins "joints" in my English-taught (!) database course. I can't help but see them as a bunch of potheads. It's because a "join" is a "jointure" in French.

I’m giving exams and trying to reply to emails. I just signed one with Christmas instead of Christophe… I am mortified.

I'm grading papers, and most students provide examples about Pokémon, Cats, and D&D. What are they trying to achieve? 😏

I live in Brussels, work in Liège, and I have no driver’s license. I am not allowed to drive a vehicle and rely on public transport for everything. How can one expect me to do my job if they are planning all these train strikes? These ridiculous actions stress me out. Should I throw in the towel?!

In other news, my homonym in France who often accidentally uses my email address had used it again for health insurance. First a dating site, then bills and professional assignments, and now health insurance cards. The health insurance company in France is the first to smoothly address the problem.

I just introduced many students to the wonderful world of databases. The first course on database design seemed to have been well received! 🥰

It’s been two years since my knee was replaced. Time flies and it’s liberating to be able to walk, sleep, stand, … without (much) pain. I still find myself becoming increasingly capable doing stuff I wasn’t previously capable of.

Went back to X to download a copy of my data. Of all the notifications I had, only 2 were of account I was following. The rest were notifications of alt-right and conspiracy-theory accounts. :-/

I love bureaucratic silliness. I have to request authorization to travel outside of Belgium for work and those need to be approved by... myself.

I recommended rejecting a paper based on blatant plagiarism. A high-impact journal now requests that I evaluate the revised paper: "The one who proposed rejection is invited to evaluate the provided rebuttal carefully and express a frank judgment on what has been done."

A student handed their exam copy and wished me a good vacation. SIR! I spend the exam session grading papers, (finally) doing some research, and reading MSc theses. 😑

About last evening. I love the gloom and tranquility…
