Attack on Titan poses the question if death can be reparation for one's crime. Can be, but will it serve justice? Will it be sufficient? Commensurate? It's dependent on the crime's gravity, not only the act itself but also its consequences. The series ironically betrays that death is not reparation.

Still, JJK is a traditional series. Its protagonist, Itadori Yuji, the series's heart, embodies strength and kindness. A balance of toughness and gentility, he has both qualities needed to fend off evil and care for the vulnerable. That he ultimately survives is an affirmation of JJK's moral ground.

Probably needless to say that Gojo's death is unsurprising, even predicated from the start. Anything 'strongest' must break. In fact, it's a law of nature. Traditional. So, his death is the traditional outcome. Its execution and pacing may be the issue, but these are also characteristic of Gege.

Gege seems to be frequently breaking out of the linear narrative, disrupting a plotline by breaking expectations, disturbing linear logic and causality, and leaving open, unfilled parts of this plotline. He invents a new thing, adding and adding then interrupting. JJK's ending then is unsurprising.

JJK's writing doesn't comply with traditional narrative. Instead, it's inclined to the segmented kind, more fitting an episodic structure or shorter arcs (culling games arc is long but composed of various battles). Unpredictable and erratic, it disturbs linear development and inclines to the absurd.

Been reading more manwha recently than mangas, and man is it nice to have older and/or actual adult protagonists. 🥹

Attack on Titan breaks the easy assumption that compatibilism is fate being the same as what's willed and desired by a person, i.e. an absolute equivalence. The series dares to hint inner agony a person endures and disbelief and dissent a person harbors as they fall into the trap of false necessity.

The Summer Hikaru Died is, at core, about pathos: losing someone and its restive grief. Finding a soul connection is a rare gift, and losing it is a rare tragedy, more felt in a suffocating, prohibitive place. Horror serves as an overlay, a literal and metaphorical space for this emotional heart.

The Summer Hikaru Died shows the slow seduction of the monstrous. That what underlays its terror is an irresistible allure and invitation. That there may be pleasure in succumbing and fusing with its horror normal waking life cannot satisfy. And it may be that the horrific waits, hidden within us.

The Summer Hikaru Died is a work on grief. Yoshiki is unable to grieve, the way he needs to, his best friend's passing. Despite 'recognizing' that Hikaru has in fact passed on, the abiding physical presence of a new Hikaru deters him to fully arrive at grief, suggesting how corporeality is so vital.

Mm, Isayama can come out of his cave now and write a new manga 'cos it appears people have already forgotten about AoT. I've looked; I see skeptics and disdainers, but love for AoT seems to be scarce. Yams, how about giving it another go? I guess all I want to say is I miss AoT and Yams's writing.

The former must be shielded for fear of being 'influenced' by the contagious, impure latter. The latter must be kept out, invisible, its entry perverse.

Another offense of Attack on Titan involves genre, which either draws closer or drives away the reader. Its first part creates a fantasy world, in which conflicts are dealt with at a safe distance for the reader. Its second shatters it and reveals a realist one, all along bound to certain cataclysm.

Buddy Daddies shows that 'family' is one actively, continuously worked by people rather than a given. It's sought and fumbled towards, often after losing one's way and turning back on an old life. Rather than closed and exclusive, it's relentlessly, magnanimously open, often, to someone in need.
