“Not at all. You…” He looked down at Adeline, then back to his lover. The feeling was nearly overwhelming as he struggled to express it. “You opened up my heart to the possibility of life after this. To love. You made her. You’re everything Julius.”

“No way.” Clive imagined them both, younger, perhaps less jaded with the world. Would they have gotten along as they did now? “Your charm transcends borders. They may have been suspicious, but you’d make a place for yourself in their hearts. As you have in mine.”

“We just know where your strengths lay my love.” Clive turned to Adeline, grinning conspiratorially with the babe as she giggled. “Daddy is so refined isn’t he? The Rosarian nobility would have loved him.”

“Adeline and I will of course give him the tour.” Clive pressed his cheek to the babe’s, speaking as though she could agree. “But we are woefully unrefined aren’t we Addy? We’re outlaws.”

It was hard to imagine his Uncle in their little Hideaway, but it was surely past time he should see what he was funding. “I’ll extend an invitation.” Clive leaned down to kiss Julius’ forehead then placed a kiss to Addy’s for good measure. “But you’ll be in charge of entertaining him.”

“I wouldn’t mind making him wait until Spring - though he may go mad collecting gifts until then.” While Julius was distracted Clive snuck the edge of the blanket back to her with a small grin so she could resume sucking at it. It had endured generations of Rosfield, surely it would survive.

Clive picked up the babe, holding her close as his heart swelled. “He insisted we could only thank him by bringing her to visit. I promised nothing but that I’d ask.”

Clive smiled as he wrapped the baby in a soft red blanket. The edges were trimmed in gold and the symbol of the Rosfield house was intricately embroidered on the back. “Uncle Byron was excited to have her in this. Apparently it’s been in the family for centuries.” @hydraens.bsky.social
