I guess I should add, airlines coming and failing is not new. My fear is that in this economy, will we ever see another ultra-low-cost carrier rise again? Spirit is older than me. This industry is so cutthroat. How will this impact the populous ability to travel by air?

All of this to say: keep an eye on JetBlue, Frontier, and Southwest. I fear what aviation will look like for the general public if only three airlines in the United States control the entire industry.

That imbalance is what makes artificially elevated fuel prices so dangerous for ultra-low-cost carriers: it doesn’t just reduce profit, it collapses the margin structure entirely, turning full flights into break-even or loss-making operations almost overnight.

So when fuel prices spike sharply, especially in a short timeframe, Spirit can’t just raise fares without killing demand, and they can’t cut costs fast enough to compensate.

The reason this hits Spirit harder than legacy airlines is because they don’t have premium cabins to subsidize the operation. There’s no Polaris seat generating $4,000 to offset fuel; every seat is priced to attract demand, not absorb cost shocks.

Spirit’s model depends on ultra-low costs and high volume, so when the single biggest variable cost spikes this aggressively, fuel, there’s no buffer.

That means fuel by itself can eat up nearly all, or even more than, the entire revenue of the flight before paying for pilots, maintenance, aircraft leasing, airport fees, or anything else.

Meanwhile, even a completely full plane only brings in about $25,000 in total revenue when you average fares and ancillary fees across ~228 passengers.

At a (inflated) fuel price of $10.02 per gallon, Spirit’s economics break almost immediately because of how thin their margins already are. A typical Airbus A321 flight burns around 2,200–2,700 gallons on a 2.5–3 hour domestic route, putting fuel alone at roughly $22,000–$27,000 per flight.

Some of the best amongst us are without work in one of the worst job markets we've ever seen. In an industry fueled by passion for a job well done, it's truly destabilizing. You may not have liked them but you always landed safely. Not many airlines can say that.

While I often joke that you wouldn’t catch me dead in spirit because I’m bougie, it should be said that Spirit was one of the safest airlines anywhere. Ever. So many of the legacy crews honed their skills on these jets. From 1992 until today, not one loss.
