For so long we have asked people how does a claim make them feel (if it is too good to be true, it often is) but increasingly we have to ask how does the systematic disruption in the foundations of information make you feel as well.

Community Notes were never going to replace fact checking. It could offer something else, something complementary. So far it does not look like it is offering much. Saying that it is a new system still being tested is simply not good enough when you are Meta. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

My whole career is based on the idea of working on web things long enough that I might one day learn how to make something this amazing. A genuine inspiration

We @whotargets.me mainly focus on political/electoral advertising, but the cost to charity fundraising of this move is going to be enormous. The largest, most well-known charities in Europe will lose access to donors and revenue and therefore will deliver less. People will die.

Every podcast I listen to has an advert about how secure WhatsApp is. Every other post I see on here is about how Gemini on Android, by default, can access your WhatsApp messages Security and convenience are hard things to explain. Neither is happening with much clarity.

I am 45 today. Bloody hell. That makes it pretty much exactly 20 years of trying to make the web better. Seemingly much of it spent like today, in a lot of meetings trying to persuade people it is possible and then on a train from London back to Wales that is delayed because the tunnel is shut.

Very interesting (and helpful) to see W3C publishing these draft Web Sustainability Guidelines which aim to 'explain how to design and implement digital products and services that put people and the planet first.'

I appreciate that dev ops work is hard, but the X platform has not been able to display any community notes, that add vital context to false content, to any of its users since the weekend. It hasn't been a quiet weekend for damaging information on that platform. That isn't good enough

I am in London for a bunch of meetings this week and just got a last minute ticket to interesting. Always a fun evening.

I really do enjoy the ones that are day job problems, but somehow cooler. (Not totally sure about the AI being non deterministic section. Maybe it is more to do with differences in the chip, temperature, copper and what have you producing fractional differences that end up as different responses?)

At times conflict, information environments can often disintegrate incredibly fast with both contradictory official information and out of context images and videos widely shared. Good write up of the later from team @fullfact.org here
