Lightning bug!

It isn't summer until you see and hear a katydid!

😲Another giant bug last night by the basement. I can't identify this beetle, but it was approximately 2 1/2" long, with antennae. It was battling with a water bottle, so it was creating a lot of noise. Big beetles can be extremely clumsy, I rescue quite a few when they just can't navigate the world.

🐸 An evening photo, dusk. This is what they do at night. From what I've read, they don't eat while absorbing their tail. They will more than likely leave overnight. Good thing there are mosquitoes around lately, available when they're ready to eat again. Send positive energy to these babies!

🐸Update on small tadpoles from weeks ago: Legs are sprouting, 5 large totes with terra cotta pots/rocks/branches, developing at slightly different rates. I cleaned ALL the water every other day, fed with both types of frog food, algae/spinach. They leave when they think they are ready...and I worry.

BIG cicada! This critter is approximately 2 1/2" long. Resting up for a long night of calling. Always fascinating insects!

🍅The Great 2026 Cherry Tomato Massacre has taken place! I expected to pick a half gallon of ripe cherry tomatoes today, I happily took my bucket to the garden and found this! Those tomatoes are all gone!!! Tomato bits everywhere! No evidence from culprit. Rac, possum? Who knows? Oh, life. LOL!🍅

🐸 The last of the large tadpoles. I moved it's tote to under the catalpa tree that has other shrubs all around it and lots of debris/leaf litter. As I was dealing with Pierogi cat, it left the tote. No sign of it! Let's hope frog programming kicks into high gear and it makes it to adulthood! #Frogs

🍅 Finally some fresh vegetables! Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes, yellow crookneck squash, Patio Baby eggplant(it's so cute!) Taking forever to produce, weird weather is probably the culprit. If anyone cares to know, Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes are reliable, taste good, and can be grown in a large pot.

🐸 HELP! I found this guy on the rim of the large tote. He STILL HAS HIS TAIL!!! I've not read about this! They have a stack of rocks that rises above the water in the center, a plexiglass panel for algae and early climbing. I poked him, he jumped back on his rock. What do I do? #Herpetology #Frogs

🐸 The large tadpoles have arms now! They don't seem to eat their frog food so I am thinking they are eating mosquito larvae. ??? They're growing fast! They're cute!

🐸 Larger tadpoles now have legs. I made them an island and they have frog food. Smaller tadpoles just had 50% fresh water change and the water is still green. They seem to be thriving, darting around. Noticed some smaller tadpoles in there which means another frog sneaked in and left babies.🙄

☠️ Alfalfa set up his pool and got a bit of color today! He's drinking lots of alcohol in preparation for his night of fireworks supervision.Yes, he teleports so you all should keep that in mind and expect a visit if you are partcipating in firework jackassery(his words.) Alf LOVES hating on stupid!

☠️ Alfalfa has been provoking Pierogi cat today and is being punished as a result. Some of you may recall that Alf is terrified of water balloons. He's trying to slide off but continues to stick pretty well. He'll be stuck there for hours! He looks EXTREMELY uncomfortable! LOL!

🐸 Found another type of tadpole in another tote. Much larger than the others. Seem to be 5/6 in there. Zooming around! (I change their water, too.) I worry about raccoons using these totes as a snack dispenser.

🐸 Tadpoles are doing well. I replace almost 40% dirty water with clean every two days. I am preparing other totes to start dividing them. The water needs to stand to heat up and start growing algae. Next year, the rainwater collectors will have screens so I don't need to WORRY about tiny lifeforms.

☠️ Someone is lurking in the mini-swamp that doubles as my rainwater container for the garden plants. I scooped out a couple gallons and IT appeared through the dense, pea green water. I think this is his gator pose? He's such a tiny twit!

🍉 A Sugar Baby baby! It's a fuzzy little thing! Hope I can grow it to the size of a baseball, at least. Will be an accomplishment having not amended the soil and using only fish emulsion as fertilizer. Could not get manure this year, I usually use it for pumpkins and melons. A good experiment!

🦝 Someone has been playing in water. I have two large, shallow pools behind the shed for the fuzzy critters and tiny hands still poke around in everything else. I had bowls out to collect rainwater for the plants, this is why I worry about the tadpoles.

🐛More caterpillars are making their presence known. The Catalpa caterpillars are pooping over everything and EVERYONE! Poor Pierogi! He's outside in the shade of the Catalpa tree with caterpillars pooping above.🙄 They will become Sphinx moths when/if they mature. People use them as fish bait.

🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛 Five tomato hornworms on the tomato plants, stripping branches! I haven't had them in 14 years! They have been snuffed out. So destructive! Encountering them is not for the faint of heart! Guess I need to put Neem on the tomato plants this year.😕 #GardenPests

While waiting for the pumpkin to grow, Alfalfa is watching true crime makeup tutorials and is trying to learn how to vogue. I've had a rough day, I'm leaving him alone. 🐸 A new problem today. My plastic tote that holds rainwater for plants now has TADPOLES/POLLIWOGS! Called a reptile shop for expert help. Algae so far is good, I cannot buy a fishtank set up. I'm told algae wafers then fish food. I will need to cover or Racs/Possum will think they're Dippin' Dots.☹️

😾 Pierogi giving me the stink eye again! He gets so upset when he must go back inside. He's had a rough two days. A small bird, possibly a Carolina Wren, shrieks at him everywhere he goes in the yard. Pierogi is oblivious to the warnings and really doesn't pay attention to birds.🙄

🔎Big garden MYSTERY! I found this volunteer plant in the garden early this year. It grew in an area where I planted squash last year so I transplanted it to a sunny spot. It smells like squash leaves but has tendrils. Squash doesn't have tendrils, it's not a vine. No vining plants last year. Hmm.

🕷 Who is hanging out in my garden? Found two large, well constructed tent nests for Nursery Web spiders. I saw one spider, looked like it was covered in light brown velvet. The spider pic was found online because I couldn't convince the spider in the garden to have her pic taken. LOL!
