MotionRec launches October 27—Record your moves and solve the puzzle
Here is a genuinely clever concept for a puzzle-action game: MotionRec is built entirely around a tape recorder mechanic where you record your movements and play them back to solve puzzles. It’s the kind of inventive, physics-bending idea that always grabs attention. I'll be honest: I think this is one of the best game mechanics I've ever seen. Not only is it almost certainly unique, it also mirrors the current vogue for retro games to have a rewind/forward option.

Interested in the technical side of retro gaming? A brand-new engine specifically designed to develop and play modern-looking Tomb Raider levels is in development. Called TombForge, this is currently a work-in-progress engine that’s incorporating a lot of advanced features. TombForge: PBR and physics for realistic tomb raiding The goal of TombForge is clearly to retain the classic level design structure of the original games while injecting modern rendering fidelity.

Michael Ironside is back as Sam Fisher, in that game from 2004 that you forgot because of Splinter Cell: Conviction. In news that has surprised everyone, and bewildered even more, Tom Clancy's Spinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow has appeared on Steam, completely unannounced. Now this is a very cool idea. Solo developer Payne Robinson is dropping Execute onto Steam in November, and while the goal—wiping out the world's 8 billion people—is pure, dark satire, the interface is what caught my eye. This game doesn't just borrow an aesthetic; it's set entirely on a cursed Win98 Desktop. For me, that's a massive draw, especially as I played a lot of strategy games on Windows 98, from…

Here's some excellent news for fans of classic adventure games: Microids has just unveiled the story trailer for Syberia Remastered, confirming the game will launch on November 6, 2025. For many of us, the original Syberia—the first game in Benoît Sokal's acclaimed series—is an iconic piece of gaming history. Its distinctive artistic identity and narrative depth have inspired generations, and this remaster is shaping up to be a true revival of that emotional journey.

I don't know about you, but my retro collection is less like a hobby and more a carefully managed obsession. Looking for a particular game is often stressful, even if you enjoy the thrill of the chase. Tracking sales across a dozen sites, trying to figure out if a rare Amiga game is a good deal, and maybe even maintaining a list -- perhaps on a spreadsheet -- to keep track of prices and availability so you can strike when the deal is best for you.

Following on from my earlier update today, as promised, here is a video look at PLAY Expo Blackpool. Specifically, this is the main room (I omitted to take video of the trade room, but you can see a snap from it below). As I explained in our latest newsletter: Walking into the main room of the event is insane. Divided into coin ops (no coin required!) and classic computers, there is also a serious bank of LAN action, where the games of choice appeared to be DOOM and Counter Strike.

How a radical design built entirely from PCBs challenges the way we think about consoles and consumer electronics Consumer technology has long followed a predictable formula. Inside, there’s a printed circuit board (PCB) packed with chips, connectors, and wires. Outside, there’s a casing—plastic, metal, or sometimes wood—designed to protect the electronics and give the device its finished look. But what if the casing wasn’t needed at all?

I'm always on the lookout for new classic-style FPS games, and in Tale of the Bullet Knight I might just have found it. Described as a "roguelike boomer shooter," Tale of the Bullet Knight is one of the more interesting retro FPS games I've seen lately. Marrying a forever lasting roguelike element with bullet hell and the notion of a knight with a pistol instead of a sword, the trailer reveals a game that is utterly frantic -- and perhaps nausea inducing:

New classics join GOG Preservation Program
Incredibly, Good Old Games started 17 years ago, and to celebrate its anniversary, the GOG Preservation Program is adding more games to its library, each over 15 years old and DRM free. When I was 17, I was more interested in going out and getting "mortalled." But then, I'm not a Gen Y. Kids are lightweight these days, and I guess that includes GOG.

80s arcade-style platformer Bomcat out this week
Crazy-looking action platformer Bomcat is coming to Steam, playing homage to multiple retro classics like Donkey Kong. A new 80s-style platformer is out on Steam tomorrow, October 1st. Bomcat owes a heavy debt to some notably classics, and features a cat and a bomb factory. The name immediately evokes Bombjack, although that particular title is not listed as a target of the game's homage.

How the Raspberry Pi changed retro gaming
One of the driving forces behind the explosion in retro gaming over the past decade is the Raspberry Pi. This simple and affordable series of single-board computers (also known as SBCs) has revolutionized retro gaming by making it accessible, affordable, and customizable. From emulating classic consoles to inspiring DIY projects, the Pi has become a cornerstone of retro gaming. I’ve been using the Raspberry Pi since the release of the original model B, and have built several retro gaming systems with it, whether using bare metal emulation or RetroPie, Recalbox, and other emulation stations.

Kingdom of Night demo drops, 16-bit style urban fantasy RPG
While the cover art doesn't give much away, the trailer for Kingdom of Night has all the 16-bit graphic feels you need for a horror urban fantasy RPG. Classic 16-bit-era games rarely featured the graphical load that Kingdom of the Night offers, but the aesthetic in this game is tasty. Coming soon to Steam and with a new demo out today, the game pits you in the streets of Miami, Arizona, in the 1980s, and offers a retro urban fantasy RPG with five character classes.

Cosmic adventures: Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are coming to Switch
Both Super Mario Galaxy games coming to Nintendo Switch in October 2025. 4K resolution and mouse support are also available for Nintendo Switch 2. The first game I played on the Nintendo Wii way back in 2010 was Super Mario Galaxy 2. As someone who considered themselves to be a "hardcore gamer" at the time, I found the notion of as bouncy plumber having adventures to be far too trivial for my time.

Members will probably be aware of the "fun" I've had recently with the BBC Model B's power supply going "pop." Prior to that happening, I had planned to kick off some regular videos of the original Football Manager, which initially was going to be loaded from cassette.
