Melplash, Dorset, SY49 21/11. I set up next to the pool on the holiday smallholding and was absolutely inundated with midges and mossies…😬 Added a few common moths to the cottage list. Had one lifer, the Gold Triangle. Also the attractive Carcina quercana, only the second I’ve seen. #teammoth

Another wander around Arne today. No outstanding highlights but watching a Firecrest flit about just above our heads was cool. We only managed about 5.5 miles as my leg and foot are absolute murder atm! 😬

Bycatch from last night included a smart wee bug which ObsId reckons is Lamprotettix nitidulus. Also nabbed this huge Ichneumon, Netelia sp. It wasn’t cooperative at all 🙄 I also had to pot a particularly aggressive wasp which was attacking the mesh of the trap, little bugger! #teammoth

The Safari XL out in the garden. Well the moths are coming in, I only had it out for a couple of hours. A few micros to sort, probably around dozen species total. Chuffed! 😁 I did find it tricky to pot moths through the flap without losing stragglers but I think that will improve. #teammoth

Very impressed with Entonets Safari XL moth trap. Originally I was going to stick to lantern and tarp on holiday. For this development I totally blame @sj84turner.bsky.social 😉😁 It’s very light and compact. Sea trials tonight in the garden if the weather’s fair 😎

Dyer’s Coreopsis, a prairie plant. An absolutely brilliant ’doer’. Hoverflies in particular swarm over it and it seems very tolerant of this hot dry weather. I pick the flowers every other day and set them to dry. Picking encourages further flowers. Carole will use them later as textile dye.

Only the second Small Copper we’ve had in the garden, the first appeared in 2020.

It’s been a very good year for our damson tree. Been picking up the windfalls for damson gin. The rest will be frozen for use in years with sparser crops. I’ve found they keep well when frozen whole for at least 2 years.

Can I have your opinions on this Copper Underwing #teammoth ? I’m thinking A. pyramidea but what do you reckon? Sadly it was a lively critter and I just couldn’t wrangle it for a clear pic of the wings so these photos are the best I could do even after the moth had been fridged for the night.

Wolverhampton SJ90 71/ 31 A quiet trap with no real surprises. An Orange Swift and Dusky Thorn were the highlights. It was however one of my most uncomfortable traps. So many biting midges 😬 Can’t remember having been bothered by them before in the garden.

Hanging out the washing when I spotted what I thought was a floundering damselfly flying into my garden. I chased it, as you do, until it flew into a web. It’s a Long-winged Cone-head (according to ObsID). Never seen one before let alone in my garden! 😁 Wolverhampton #grasshopper #cricket

It was surreal at the trap last night. I felt I was being pelted with rice. Turned out to be hundreds of tiny water boatmen just dropping onto the white tarp. Many were still there this morning. Guess they mistook it for a pond. #teammoth
