The House of Representatives is where I cast my vote, but I always look forward to being back in the district. Here are just a few cultural celebrations, civic events, and neighborhood gatherings I visited recently.

I had the honor of meeting Jade, resident of Rye and the NY-16 Congressional Art Competition winner! Her incredible painting representing our country’s diverse history will be on display in the Capitol for the next year. We are proud to have such talent representing this district!

On this day, just a short eleven years ago, marriage equality was deemed the law of the land when it was recognized by the Supreme Court of the United States. This decision didn't just change the law, but countless lives were changed by this historic decision.

At home in White Plains, I was able to celebrate with IBEW Union members at the annual Juneteenth Parade! I had a great time talking with members about the importance of bringing community to celebrate this important date in history. I hope everyone had a great Juneteenth!

We celebrate the end of slavery in America by celebrating Juneteenth. On this day, the last enslaved people in the United States got word that they were free. We celebrate this day not only to remember the historic moment of freedom, but to reaffirm our commitment to the ongoing pursuit of equality.

Today, I met with Ambassador Ilir Dugolli of Kosovo to discuss the importance of America’s continued strategic support and unwavering commitment to Kosovo’s statehood. I will continue to urge our leaders to work closely with Kosovo to ensure their continued success as Europe’s youngest democracy.

Inflation rose to 4.2% and the higher price tag on everyday necessities is growing. Meanwhile, my Republican colleagues do nothing besides fulfill a nonsense agenda from the White House. It’s time to address the crisis and actually make a plan.

Today on National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we #wearorange to honor those taken too soon by gun violence. We remember the victims, survivors, and loved ones affected by tragedy and keep them in our hearts as we work towards making a world free of gun violence.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to stop by the Hastings-On-Hudson Fire Department along with Mayor Thomas Drake and Greenburgh Councilman Francis Sheehan to present Fire Chief Michael Gunther a flag and to thank the brave men and women for answering the call to service.

This week, I spoke on the House floor regarding legislation put forward in the House Foreign Affairs Committee to designate the Chancery of the United States in Pristina, Kosovo, as the 'Eliot L. Engel Building.’ May his legacy be remembered and his memory serve as a blessing.

I met with Women’s Health Advocates to discuss the need for investment into women’s health research. Hearing firsthand experiences gives a personal perspective to the policies we champion, and I’m grateful for every opportunity to understand how we can better support our community members.

Last week at Lehman College, I had the opportunity to honor the life and legacy of the late Congressman Eliot Engel. I spoke to his representation of what it truly means to put community first and to deliver meaningful results for neighbors both near and far. May his memory be a blessing.

We grieve the passing of George Gresham, a leader in the New York State union movement who served as head of 1199SEIU alongside members in the healthcare field. His tenure was groundbreaking, and all will miss his leadership and friendship in the weeks to come. May he rest in power.

This week is National Nurses Week and we honor those who answer the call to care for their communities. To all members of the Westchester and Bronx community who serve as nurses - thank you for choosing to do the tireless work necessary to support our neighbors.

Last week, I had some special guests in D.C.! The Lefell School brought a class of high school sophomores to learn how to be political advocates and to pitch ideas on legislation surrounding poverty, homelessness, and protections for children in domestic violence situations.
