When you think of it from a psychological stand-point, the way that Sha-Ming describes his experiences becoming Gnosia is morbidly reminiscent of PTSD symptoms, even more so where his past is involved and how he repeatedly has dreams / flashbacks of it ever since becoming Gnosia.

I constantly feel the need to talk about Otome's Note 6 / Bug event and how important it is to the context of her character. Wishing that she could become human somehow — even just something resembling one — yet having to live with the fact that it is simply not a possibility.

Some of Sha-Ming's lines and his whole infatuation with Setsu are some examples of sociosexual behaviour in using his body / sex to show gratitude and appreciation. But I kind of wonder if, considering his background, Sha-Ming just may not know how to properly express these feelings outside of this.

I know we all like to joke about how Sha-Ming is a scumbag and in fact the anime did tone down his fuckboyness a bit to make him more empathetic, but if your takeaway is 'he's a sex pest (???)/he's an irredeemable person' then you gotta unlearn the bs you learned in Twitter School of Media Analysis

Ok real talk, I do kind of imagine sex as means to establish emotional connection for Sha-Ming. This leans a bit into his background of being raised around bonobos (sociosexual behaviour), but I feel like it could put him in a position where he can potentially be somewhat more vulnerable, in a way.

I've thought about this before and likely it's an accidental or subconscious theme more than anything the creators envisioned, but I'm really struck by Gnosia as a metaphor for the experience of refugees. Stuck on a ship that will never dock, until they prove that they are human.

I would top Sha-Ming.
