As a young PI, it can feel like everything is out of our control. But today, we used our lab meeting to have each person draft and submit comments on the OMB rule. It felt really good to prioritize this within the work day for our lab, and it felt more empowering to do it as a group.

Hantavirus is unlikely to spiral into a pandemic. But the real story is this: WHO is on the cruise ship. It's issuing clear guidance. It's coordinating across countries. CDC has been largely silent—no guidance to doctors, no public update.

In 2014 I was sent by an NGO to work on a vaccine program reconstruction plan in Northern Syria because an autocrat had decimated a highly effective program, putting millions of children at risk, both in Syria and neighboring countries through the refugee diaspora.
