Hantavirus is unlikely to spiral into a pandemic. But the real story is this: WHO is on the cruise ship. It's issuing clear guidance. It's coordinating across countries. CDC has been largely silent—no guidance to doctors, no public update.

Check out the preprint of a project I had the pleasure of working on with Nicola Mueller and Louise Moncla on North American H5 reassortment! Feel free to reach out with questions or thoughts!

This is my old team. The "rabies team will be down to just one person with the clinical expertise to advise state and local officials, and the pox virus team will have none." A disservice to our best scientists, the health departments that rely on them, and the country.

What could possibly go wrong?
#CDC
pauses support for states on testing for
#rabies
&
#mpox
because it doesn't have the personnel to do the work. 2 pathogens you really don't want to mess with, rabies & mpox.

Day 1 in a new lab: “You’ll be working on this organism now.” Me: cool cool cool (has never heard of it) I wrote the checklist I use to survive that situation: 👉 self-onboarding a new pathogen

So you want to work on a new pathogen: a self-onboarding checklist
Imagine, you are a bioinformatician but you go into a new lab or go into a new project. You know your basics: genome assembly, genome annotation, SNPs, MLST, the usual toolkits. So you’re mostly good...

Howdy y'all! I'm planning to graduate in May. If you are in need of a postdoc with knowledge of phylogenetics, graph databases, and Nextflow pipelines (or know of someone who is), please send them my way!

Today (Tuesday), I'm presenting a poster on a flexible graph database pipeline for data integration, with a small teaser on a completed subsampling tool for phylogenetics, if you want to chat about that instead!

In 2014 I was sent by an NGO to work on a vaccine program reconstruction plan in Northern Syria because an autocrat had decimated a highly effective program, putting millions of children at risk, both in Syria and neighboring countries through the refugee diaspora.

Just in time for the holidays, our lab has just submitted our first lab led paper
