Hour at Weir wood after work seeing Goosander,Great White Egret,Peregrine,Red Kite,Marsh Tit,Lesser Redpolls & Common Gulls.

Widewater Still the Goosander (redhead) on Widewater,62 Dunlin,25 Ringed Plovers & 8 Turnstones on beach. Plenty of Red-throated divers,Razorbills,Gannets passing plus 3 Brent geese E and 7 Great Crested grebes on sea. RSPB Adur Greenshank,2 Grey Plovers,2 Curlew,28 Teal+ Kingfisher.

Bough Beech Res Quick late afternoon visit seeing 2 Shelduck,3 Goosanders,80+ Pochards,50+ Tufties,40+ Wigeon,Kingfisher & Little Grebe.

Little Strudgate Still at least 8+ Hawfinches yesterday afternoon,2 Skylarks,Kestrel,Goshawk and several Buzzards.

RSPB Garden watch 13sp, Highlight was a pair of Nuthatches on the feeders. Good to count 22+ House Sparrows also

Look in our pond this evening, it’s already alive with Palmate Newts and several Smooth Newts. They seem to return earlier each year.

Amazing this afternoon being in the woods surrounded by Hawfinches,feeding just feet away calling and chasing each other constantly. Lovely flock of 50 Fieldfares over too.

6 Hawfinch at Little Strudgate this afternoon, plus 4 Woodlarks.

Little Strudgate at dawn, Hawfinch heard then 3 perched up in spruce then flew off. Minute later 4th bird flew out of copse then 2 more spotted on top of an old Ash,so 4 maybe 6 birds. Two flocks of Crossbills 25+18 flying around calling, unfortunately couldn’t find any Woodlarks this morning.

WW res 270+ Lapwings went west during the afternoon. 52 Teal,33 Tufties,12 Wigeon,12 Pochards,6 Gadwall,6 Mandarin,2 Shovelers. Also Little Grebe,28 GC Grebes,6 Mute Swans,Kingfisher,2 Little Egrets,Red Kite,Sprawk,Buzzards,Kestrel and plenty of Common Gulls.

WW res 45 Tufties,34 Teal,Great white Egret,3 Little Egrets,Kingfisher plus male Goshawk,2 Ravens,Grey Wag,27 Lapwings west and 2 Little Grebes. 74 species so far…

WW res Just 2 Goosanders and a Great white Egret added to the year list this afternoon,female Goshawk chasing a very lucky Woodpigeon was amazing to watch.

Few starlings at Hedgecourt this evening, lakes already frozen over.

Henfield Levels 7 Tundra Bean Geese,13+ Russian white-fronted Geese & 4 Barnacle Geese amongst usual Canadas and Greylags. 1 Black- tailed Godwit,4 Dunlin,1 Snipe & 288 Lapwings. Hundreds each of Teal & Wigeon with 91 Shovelers & 69 Pintails noted. Black Swan,Peregrine,2 Red Kites,Raven & Sprawk.

Weir Wood This afternoon 2 Avocets out on the reservoir with the Black - Headed Gulls were my 125th patch year species, earlier a Russian White- Fronted Goose was seen by JR flying E over the dam our 149th site species recorded this year.

WWT Arundel Watching from the river bank 3 Hen Harriers,ringtail 15:18,male 16:22 & ringtail 16:24 came in plus 2-3 Marsh Harriers,54+Cattle Egrets & Redhead Goosander. Peregrine,Red Kites,Raven,Black Swan,Water rail,Cetti’s warbler and loads of Redwings noted.

The Burgh Dull and windy up on the downs,male Marsh Harrier,Buzzards,Kestrels,Red Kites plenty of Grey Partridges and 3 Brown Hares. Good numbers of Linnets,Chaffinches,Yellowhammers & Common Gulls.5 Chiffchaffs,2 Black Swans,2 Shoveler and 3 Cattle Egrets below the church.

Hedgecourt Thousands of Starlings dropping into to roost this evening, plus a pair of Sparrowhawks hunting. Water rail Squealing in Reed bed and a Kingfisher wizzed by..

Ashdown Forest In very wet conditions I only managed to carry out one of my WeBs counts late morning, 105 Common Snipe,1 Jack Snipe & 1 Woodcock. Dropped into WW res on the way back where 71 Pochards were at the west end.

Weir Wood 62 Pochards and Great white Egret, at dusk 2,300 Starlings & 26 Reed Buntings into Reed Bed. Goshawk,Peregrine over and 2 Woodcocks,4 Snipe,3 Teal & 3-4 Tawny Owls calling at dusk.

Weir Wood res Goosander ( redhead) 25 Pochards,Little Grebe,Sparrowhawk,Red Kite,50 Redwings,5 Fieldfares and thousands of Starlings on there way to roost.

Quick look at Weir Wood mid afternoon found 22 Pochards,Great white Egret and a near adult female Goshawk was showing well over the west end scattering the Woodpigeons. 30+ Linnets were in the stubble fields and fair numbers of both fieldfares and Redwings noted.

Widewater Trip down to see the winter plumage Slavonian Grebe, also a redhead Goosander,Brent Goose,Black Swan,Med Gulls,Meadow Pipits,Turnstones and loads of Little Grebes. At the cafe plenty of friendly Starlings.

Weir Wood male Goshawk chasing Woodpigeons over the west end this afternoon,17 Pochards still. At the Reed bed 22 Reed Buntings and 327 Starlings roosted. Woodcock over at 16:45 and 7 Snipe dropped in to feed,10 pairs of Teal flew west and several Tawny Owls calling.

Weir Wood Late morning a lovely male Marsh Harrier flew east,in set aside fields 100 Chaffinches,10 Goldfinches,8 Reed Buntings,2 Yellowhammers & 1 Brambling.

At first light a female Goshawk was already up flying around,8 Hawfinch dropped into trees just after sunrise. Red Kites moving north after coming out of roost, many thousands of Woodpigeons flying around in all directions. 2 Greenfinch,45 Linnets,Chaffinches,Fieldfares and Redwings noted.

Weir Wood Late morning flocks of 25 & 28 dark bellied Brents flew over SW,20 Pochards still. Earlier at 09:55 two White tailed Eagles over Sharpthorne,then a Drake Goldeneye on Ardingly res was nice place an immature Goshawk.

Weir Wood 3 Bramblings,140 Redwings,500+ Starlings and 400 Woodpigeons on the move this afternoon. Just 3 Little Grebes new in,Marsh Tit on feeders.

Rackham VP White tailed Eagle showed well as did 2 Marsh Harriers. Distant Whooper Swan,Glossy Ibis was much more showy and a Ruff spotted amongst 180+ Lapwings. Thousands of Geese but no Ducks,similar at Henfield Levels this morning.

Good to catch up with the 1w Izzy Shrike sp at Woods Mill early afternoon.

Around 200 Parakeets currently roosting at The Mill Pond,Crawley… Probably the largest number recorded in Sussex, 2 Redwings and a Little Grebe noted too.

Gets earlier every year..,Can’t wait to look through it

Weir Wood Really pleased with finding a Yellow browed Warbler this morning, calling in the NE boundary fence at Whillet’s.Unfortunately as soon as I’d located which small tree it was in it flew to larger trees called several times then vanished. 2 Bramblings,40+ Redwings,40 Chaffinch,20 Siskin too

Weir Wood Quick Look late afternoon, had a Peregrine which flew towards the dam. Flock of 25 Redwings north,2 Meadow Pipits SE. On the water 22 Teal,12 Mandarins,5 Wigeon,Shoveler,2 Little Grebes,2 Little Egrets and 2 Kingfishers.

Outstrays NR Stunning male Hen Harrier hunting over the fields this morning,at least one Glossy Ibis noted. 4 or 5 Marsh Harriers over the marsh with several Buzzards and Kestrels.3 Great Egrets and stacks of Little Egret. Flyby of hundreds of Golden Plovers and Pink footed Geese,2 Green Sands too.
