On this day in Vermont history: New York officials attacked Ethan Allen's cousin Remember Baker at his Arlington home in 1772. Allen, Baker and their compatriots had been wanted by New York officials after they fought against efforts to evict settlers from their land granted by New Hampshire.

Here’s a diary from our collection from Phil Howes of Montpelier. In March 1936, a storm moved across the US from the Midwest to the Northeast, causing massive flooding across New England, New York, and Pennsylvania.

We are very pleased to announce our next book: When the Trees Came Back: The Great Battle to Save Vermont’s Forests by Robert Mello. This book explores the long campaign to reverse the deforestation that decimated Vermont’s ancient forests after the arrival of settlers in the mid-1700s.

We are sad to report that former journalist, writer, and VHS Trustee Christopher Wren passed away at the age of 89 in February at his home in Thetford, per The New York Times.

On this day in 1865, Governor J. Gregory Smith issued a proclamation to convened the state's General Assembly in special session in order to ratify the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which formally abolished slavery.

In February 1886, the Burlington Coasting Club hosted a week-long Carnival of Winter Sports. 40,000 people attended, and the events included coasting (bobsledding), ice skating, snowshoe races, and on February 26th, the first international ice hockey tournament!

30 years ago this week, the independent comedy film Man With A Plan premiered. It starred Tunbridge dairy farmer and actor Fred Tuttle as a fictional version of himself, in which he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Thanks to the Waterbury Roundabout for covering author Jeffrey Amestoy's event in Waterbury! He spoke about his recent book, Winters’ Time: A Secret Pledge, a Severed Head, and the Murder That Brought America's Most Famous Lawyer to Vermont and Vermont's legal history.

Correction: Two years from now. The next winter Olympics in the United States will be in 2034 in Utah and Lake Placid.

This year's Winter Olympics are coming into the final couple of days, and after that, it'll be four years before the next event, which will be the 2028 summer games in LA. Here's an item in our collection from when the games were last held in the United States: the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah.

The 2026 Winter Olympics are underway, and ski jumping has particularly captivated us this week - not just in Italy, but closer to home at Brattleboro's Harris Hill this coming weekend, which will be holding the Fred Harris Memorial Tournament & Junior World Qualifier this weekend.

On this day in Vermont History: Alden Partridge is born in Norwich in 1785. He studied engineering at the US Military Academy at West Point and went on to teach at the school.

Vermonter Ryan Cochran-Siegle just earned a silver medal at the 2026 Olympics in Wednesday's super-G competition! It's his second silver in the category after his win in 2022. vtdigger.org/2026/02/11/v...

Congratulations are in order to Olympic skier Ben Ogden, who just took home the Silver medal for the Cross-Country Skiing Men’s Sprint Classic — the first American to medal in the sport since 1976!

NASA is preparing to launch astronauts to the Moon for the first time since 1972 onboard the NASA Artemis mission this spring! We have a tiny connection to this moment in history: we hold a pair of Moon rocks gifted to the State of Vermont from the Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 missions!

On this day in Vermont history: Norman Rockwell was born in New York City in 1894. He became one of the best-known American artists of the 20th Century (particularly for the covers he illustrated for The Saturday Evening Post and for paintings such as Rosie the Riveter, and the Four Freedoms series)

In its Winter 2026 issue, The Vermont Bar Journal reviewed Jeffrey Amestoy's book Winters' Time, saying "The fortunate intersection of a forgotten case and an inquisitive former chief justice has provided a compelling book. Winters’s Time deserves a wide audience ..."

40 years ago today, Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrated shortly after liftoff, killing all seven members of its crew. The tragedy hit New England hard: astronaut Christa McAuliffe was a school teacher who taught in New Hampshire and many students were watching the launch live.

Historic buildings require a lot of work, and the heavy rain and flooding that took place in 2023 and 2024 was hard on the Vermont History Center. Last fall, we began work on some longstanding and pressing issues, starting with the building’s windows, which had begun to require attention.

On this day in Vermont history: on the evening of January 6th, 1857, the second Vermont State House in Montpelier caught fire and burned down. Earlier that evening, a worker had stoked a fire to warm the building ahead of a constitutional convention set to take place the next day.

188 years ago this month, George Dewey was born in Montpelier. After attending Norwich University and the Naval Academy, he played a pivotal role in the Spanish American War, and returned home to Montpelier a national hero.

Earlier this fall, we embarked on a large project at the Vermont History Center in Barre: addressing a host of long-standing issues facing the historic Spaulding School Building in an effort to preserve not only our artifact and library collections, but the structure itself: keeping water out.
