I just did a mini-quiz in this Coursera course. I selected an answer from a multiple choice list, and it told me the answer was incorrect, even though the video had JUST told me the answer was correct.

just to keep harping on what a fucked-up language English is, it occurs to me that you have the 5 W's: Who, What, When, Where, Why But 'Who' is the only one of the list that you don't pronounce the 'W' explicitly. Why the fuck not? This is why English is so fucked. No concrete rules.

Adding to my list of skills schools should ACTUALLY teach: Logic and reason. Kids need to be taught how to make solid arguments based on facts, not emotion. If all kids were taught that, shit like what's happening now would not have.

And here's what the body does as it gets older. Because we all do get older and you need to know what can happen. This is difficult for kids because the natural immortality that all youth feels is not real.

But regardless of the field a kid goes into, there are clear do's and don'ts for everything. And a lot of it comes down to: prepare to fail. Here's what you do in case you lose your job. Here's how to pivot to a new opportunity. Here's how to develop evergreen skills.

Something else schools should teach: how to manage a career. Kids need to understand that the kind of success the big youtube or tiktok names have isn't something you can plan to have. The competition is insane and there's no way to know what will make someone big.

By the way, he's also a karate black belt, something that I never pushed for, but he fucking earned it with hard work. And he'll never do combat sports, but he has a confidence that anyone can see that's so much more of a deterrence than being a cocky asshole.

But having said that, he is still young, and he is still learning things that any school should have taught him: How to make and keep appointments. Basic car maintenance. Dealing with maintaining good credit. How to save money. Basic things that never gets taught.

There were so many ways he could have turned out bad once he was out of the house and in college, but I guess we instilled enough of our hard-earned wisdom in him to guide him, and I'm so thankful he is who he is

I feel very fortunate that my son has become someone who is respectful; has close, non-sexual and non-romantic friends of the two main genders; speaks very well; is not afraid to work hard; maintains a loving relationship with me and his mother.

In other words, things that we all eventually end up learning the HARD WAY. Make that mandatory curriculum. ACTUALLY PREPARE KIDS FOR THE REAL WORLD.

Teach kids how to make basic meals. How to shop for ingredients. How to identify a liar. How to understand when someone is trying to distract them from the real meaning. Seeing the message behind the message.

And at the same time, kids who train wrestling with other kids gives them a chance to win with humility, help other kids who need pointers, lose with grace, prop each other up, etc.

And every kid needs to be taught how to recognize danger. How to listen to their instincts. How to wrestle. I'm not fucking kidding. A basic grounding in wrestling can help so many kids with confidence issues, not to mention nullifying a larger opponent.

They should be taught how to manage money. They should be taught what credit is about. They should be taught how to identify their interests and how to pursue them. They should be taught HOW TO FUCKING FAIL AND CONTINUE ON

History by this point is SO huge and SO politically loaded it should really be reserved for college. No, what young kids need to be taught is: diplomacy, respect of their elders, respect for those who are different, respect for world culture.

Incidentally, a few weeks back I was ranting about what schools should ACTUALLY teach kids instead of fucking math, history, etc. Like, sure, give a basic arithmetic course, basic literacy for 10 and under, sure. But only proceed with higher math if a student shows aptitude and interest.

And may I say, Thailand has a flamboyant gay dude on their team and he's fucking great. He COMPETES.

But holy shit it was so cool during the first episode, when all the teams arrive one by one, and the Phillipines come in last and EVERYONE was just awed to see Manny come through the door Just MAD RESPECT from every single other player for Manny

And it does hurt me a bit to see Manny kinda not doing so well. BUT He's in the 2:2 match now, so LET'S GET IT MANNY

Physical: Asia just got to the stuff I'm really interested in, the 1:1 and 2:2 matches, where players have to get a ball to the goal. But this first match is a sambo guy against a rugby guy and it's not as cut-and-dried as you might think, either way

but back to Physical: Asia it's sweet how players talk about the MMA guys in the matches, but come on Calling Yushin Okami an "MMA legend" is a bit much

I'm not kidding when I say this: VERY few things in life make me more joyful than when I see players of different races embracing each other in both victory and defeat. Sports is an equalizer and a barometer of one's true personality. Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. That's all.

These fucking fourteen year old babies -- regardless of how old they ACTUALLY are -- just whine ALL the time and quit before they have to admit they lost. Get some got-damn SPORTS in you, proles. It's fucking good for you.

And sports teaches that. It teaches how to fail with grace and dignity. Something else you learn when you play an actual, physical sport: you support your got-damn teammates. You don't shit on them because they missed a goal or failed to defend.

And it's clear to me how a lot of video game players have never played sports. Because if they had, you wouldn't get so fucking much bad manners in games like Rocket League. TONS of players quit without the very simple "Good game" or "GG". It's common fucking courtesy, y'all

Y'know, I never used to be a sports guy, growing up. It really wasn't until 2010 and the SF Giants' run at the World Series that I "got" sports. And a lot of that was thanks to my son. And now I watch a TON of sports of different flavors.
