Finished. Had this book for over fifteen years, and finally thought I should knock it out before A TABLE FOR FORTUNE arrives next year. It’s Vollmann at his best: dense, beautiful, insightful, empathetic. Also, recursive and indulgent. But hey, isn’t war?

Now that’s one big book that just arrived in the mail. (My current read, the 800-plus page EUROPE CENTRAL for scale.)
