It's still #TBRChallenge day where I live! This month's theme was "freedom", so reading a Beverly Jenkins seemed appropriate (Erin and Ingrid are blissfully on vacation and not thinking about the TBR piles at all)

I had to restart Chrome and no longer have 800 tabs open. Deepest apologies to all those articles I was definitely gonna read some day.

Review: An Education in Longing by Charlotte Stein If you're looking for sexy pining and lots of angst and awkward banter, this book is excellent. If you're looking for a straightforward plot that holds together, not so much.

Review: Shadows of Sparta by C.R. Jane Since this is a Helen of Troy retelling, we all know that things are going to go really badly (and this book was absolutely heartwrenching), but Ingrid suspects that this is going to be a great trilogy.

Review: A Treason of Magic by Melissa Marr The premise was promising, but the execution didn't work for me on this one

My current nonfiction read is What We Talk About When We Talk About Books by Leah Price. It's from 2019, so some things are a little dated, but one central idea is that reading is not a solitary activity, but one that can be embedded in community.

This is a great book but the hero is a duke with a pole up his butt, not a rogue at all. (the heroine, on the other hand, fixes horse races)

It's good that Erin read this and not me, because I would not have been able to resist getting deeeep into the cult stuff. It would not have been pretty. (I wrote my dissertation on portrayals of cults / escape from them in American pop culture. Nobody wants to read that on a smut blog.)

Guys, this book has the worst cover and title but it's so good! I cannot stress how badass the heroine is, she runs an underground network to help women escape abusive situations. Also she never dresses like Mrs. Claus. And the hero is not a duke.

I did find it a little bit funny that what Marr learned from Johanna Lindsey is that women's happiness matters in a relationship, considering the particular book she mentioned is, uh, not that. (Yes, it's A Pirate's Heart. IYKYK.)
