What actually is photonics? Photonics is a field of physics and a sub-discipline of the broader branch of optics but there are debates regarding the definition of photonics.

🎉We were lucky enough to have the Innovate UK project that we worked on featured in a peer-reviewed journal! 🎉 This collaboration was led by Metamorphic AM and included the University of Nottingham and RAL Space.

Our re-entrant viewports and Brewster windows can look quite similar upon first glance! Add into the mix we have manufactured angled re-entrant viewports, and it can all get a bit confusing. Let’s explore the differences!

Today, the 14th April is World Quantum Day! ⚛️ This is a day for collaboration between the various explorations into quantum, whether that be science, technology, engineering, history, philosophy or even art. 🔎

⚛️ At the end of last year, we were lucky enough to acquire a Hitachi S-3200N scanning electron microscope (SEM). ⚛️ This is now in use within the factory for inspecting damaged anode films sent in for recoating and repair, materials identification and for quality control of our coatings!

Sapphires are usually known for their distinctive blue colour, but our optics are a bit different - they completely colourless as well as optically transparent! 🪟 So why are they different? Our optical grade sapphires are a synthetic, refined version of aluminium oxide.

Here at Torr, we use TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding for most of our products such as viewports, anodes, tubulations, glass cells and special one-off products we have manufactured. However, sometimes we use spot welding when TIG welding is less practical!
