My class researched college students' views on AI and found their peers are worried about the future AI portends but are more urgently afraid of falling behind when everyone else is using it. It's helplessness fueled by a sense of vulnerability - students know that "all that is solid melts into air"

I had this conversation w colleagues the other day, who struggled to find the value of academic research in this historical moment. (I get it.) But look, if our work and writing didn’t matter, they wouldn’t try to stop us from doing it. They simply wouldn’t care. But they do. Because it matters.

I always ask my soci101 class what is/not welfare (SNAP, SS, public ed) & they say "welfare" for $ to poor fams and "not welfare" to broad services. I do this to expand their understanding of a welfare state but a few always say "then SS & public ed are bad" - to me this captures what we're seeing

Talking with conservative fam/friends about EOs and science, I keep reiterating: the EOs aren't about mitigating bias in the research process (ethics standards, replicability, systematic analysis, etc.) They're unabashedly limiting the kinds of Qs we can ask at all. This distinction is so important.
