The act of immediately cutting funding to USAID is a form of genocide. It targets not a single people, but entire regions of “others”. It’s racism and xenophobia at its most callous. Thanks to @billmckibben.bsky.social for connecting the dots.

This is what oligarchy looks like: If you're Elon Musk, the richest man alive, Tesla gives you a $1 trillion pay package & Trump gives you a huge tax break. If you're a poor kid on SNAP, Trump appeals a court decision that would have prevented you from going hungry. Obscene.

There is a term for national buying into major corporations: National socialism. Nazism for short. Hitler developed it and Trump is copying it openly and faithfully. It has the worst features of both socialism and communism and the good of neither.

So we have the delightful spectacle of Mamdani being both a jihadi (because his ancestors were Muslim) and a communist (because he is liberal). The militant atheism of communists is not a concept any more. Meanwhile, "capitalism" is stretched to include Trump's US buying into major corporations.

More and more fascinating is the total misuse of political words. "Socialism" now means everything from mail service and public roads (both done by every government in the history of the world) to Stalin. "Communism" means "anything MAGA doesn't like." "Jihadi" means anyone with any Muslim heritage.

No matter how hard people try to convince us having empathy is wrong, it is right. No matter how hard people try to convince us that diversity is a weakness, it is a strength. No matter how hard people try to convince us that love is limited, it is unlimited.

More worries: with Teen Vogue joining WaPo in caving in, the liberal press is about silenced nationally. Meanwhile the billionaires are all slowly falling in line behind fascism. This has gotten scary. We need to reach out to the rich and tell them hard truths about economics and fascist regimes.

Here are my three truths about climate: 1. We fail if we don’t end free-to-pollute fossil fuel model. Period. Game over. 2. A crash looms, prefigured by collapse in home insurance/mortgage markets. 3. There are true villains in the story, and we have to tell it that way.

Chaos when a new leader comes in. Inevitable vindictiveness--expect opposition to be exterminated. Extreme escalation of inequality. Above all, general contempt for the law. You can see that now in ICE etc. but also in road rage, running stoplights, and other now-common everyday crimes.

Costs of rule by one man rather than rule of law: Succession fights (in old days, you had to kill your brothers to be sure of power). Whims (see the US now). Real errors, understandable but often deadly, and easily fixable by listening to other powers. Rapid changes of policy for no reason.

Democracy is collapsing in the US, and must be saved, but possibly just as bad is the collapse of the rule of law. The Supreme Court has seen fit to give up on 250 years of Constitutional law and give the country to the whims of a tyrant. This will not end well (see following post).

I'm still waiting for anyone on the left to show as much concern for the millions murdered by canceling USAID and all work on climate change as they do for the White House East Wing.

Republican manipulation of the elections will kill all Dem chances in 2026 unless a lot of action is taken.

The Democrats absolutely must get together enough to craft a Project 2026 or 2028. Without a better and more assertive plan than the current mess, they have no chance.

This remains the funniest way to hear about an internet outage, though.

Repeating myself...but everybody needs to hear again and again that the mass murder caused by cutting USAID medical aid, by essentially terminating CDC, and by ending concern for global climate change deserves a LOT more attention. Thousands are dying already.

Those far-right corporations also succeeded in dividing the liberals, setting them against each other, leading to Trump's two victories--each time with minorities, the liberals having split the vote.
