I first saw Hard Boiled many years back via a rip of the Criterion LD, back when it was OOP everywhere during the dark ages for the Golden Princess library. To be able to have these masterpieces in 4K with properly redone translations and extras galore is a dream come true.

I watched Peking Opera Blues for the first time last night and it’s one of the coolest films I’ve ever seen. Everyone should go and buy Arrow’s new 4K UHD, not just for the film, but the new translation by @dylancheung.bsky.social, which is one of the best I’ve ever seen (and want to discuss).

My holiday is over

I somehow made it through another year. Nobody knows what the future has in store, so here's to hoping 2026 will work out better for us all.

Being able to rewatch probably my favorite movie of all time for the first time in a theatre and via an original 35mm print has been one of the greatest filmgoing experiences of the year. I loved every minute and it was absolute heaven seeing it in the big screen in this way.

In terms of artwork and physical packaging, I doubt any release this year will top Profile of Mona Lisa (Alt text descriptions available)

Alien Nine The surreal nightmarish action drama four episode OVA series is getting a new release after being out of print for a very long time! The new release will also include the existing English dub.

I was doing a movie with Tsui Hark (and Oliver Stone's producer, A. Kitman Ho), back in 1997. A live action adaption of "Lupin III", that we would have done with Jim Carrey. Alex Ho (lovely, lovely man) ended up losing the rights, so it never happened. Craziest screenplay I ever wrote! #scriptsky

Peak cinema has arrived

Gundam GQuuuuuuX was amazing. You can 1000% tell this was directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and co-written by Yoji Enokido and Hideaki Anno. The perfect marriage of the Gundam franchise with that signature Gainax charm and bits of Utena sprinkled in. A must watch for franchise fans.

Month is off to a great start

I just saw The Colors Within. Everyone needs to see it. Finally, some real competition for best film of 2024. A beautiful artistic achievement, Naoko Yamada delivers maybe her most accomplished film to date. A modern masterpiece. The finale had me in prolonged tears. Bravo. 10/10
