I love finding interesting tiny plants when surveying #peatland sites, and lesser twayblade hasn't been recorded at this one before 😊

I'm sitting on this lump of quartz wondering what significance it might have had in times gone by 🤔 It's now in the middle of a lovely #peatland site with orchids and lesser twayblade nearby 😊

Just out for a wander among the cottongrass 😍 This little caterpillar was pretty well camouflaged until it started moving!

Nice to see this fungi growing on an area of bare #peat on Beinn-y-Phott 😀 Not sure what it is though, so if anyone has any ideas please let us know! 🍄

Not long now until the hills turn white with fluffy cottongrass seed heads 😍 Cottongrass loves wet, peaty habitats and spreads by seed and by underground rhizomes. It is particularly good for covering areas of bare peat and providing shelter for sphagnum moss to become established 🌿

What a day for a #peatland walk 😊

The marsh violets are flowering among the Sphagnum moss 🌸😍 These flowers arise from creeping underground runners and typically bloom from April to July. Like us, they love #bogs, #peat and marshy ground 😁 💦

I love seeing mountain hares on our #peatland sites 😍

It's that time of year when the hills are alive with new growth 😍 This moss, known as 'bog haircap moss', is glowing with capsules held on slender red stems, called 'seta'. Once the capsules mature, they will release their spores to the wind, allowing the moss to disperse 💨🌿

Trapping sediment and water on damaged #peatland has multiple benefits 👍 The slower movement of water creates shallow pools which benefit invertebrates and ground nesting birds 🌿🐦 Peaty sediment is deposited behind the bunds, preventing it from reaching water courses and reservoirs 😊

After some heavy lifting we've started to install wool rolls from Sustainable Rope 🐏 These are 100% wool rolls which we are trialling to see how they work compared with the coir rolls we've used so far🤔 We hope they work well, as it would be great to use local wool to help restore our #peatlands 😀

Spring is definitely in the air 😍 The skylarks are singing on Beinn-y-Phott 🎶🐦 (turn the volume up) and the sun is shining 🌞 It's about time, after a long and very wet winter!

The bunds are doing their thing during this wet weather 😀 Bunds can be placed across eroding water channels to slow the flow of water, trap sediment and create shallow pools 💦 We currently use heather bales and coir logs, but are planning to trial wool logs shortly 🐑 Watch this space 👀 #peatland

We have started growing locally sourced sphagnum moss for our #peatland restoration work 🌿 😀 This follows a small trial at the end of last summer and subsequent advice from Gill at the Calderdale Sphagnum Project 💦 To find out how it grows, watch this space 👀

Low ground pressure tracks are important in #peatland restoration, so it was great to meet the manufacturers on site 😊

The strong easterly winds have been bitterly cold, but it's a good incentive to work hard and keep warm 🥶 #peat

An atmospheric day in the office today...at least it's not raining 😁

There was a resurgence of #peat cutting on the #IsleOfMan during the war, including the use of #internee labour. There was also a strike by workers complaining about the weather and the challenging work! See: www.linkedin.com/posts/manx-p...

There’s a fantastic photo of a cap woven from Polytrichum commune in Melanie Giles’ Bog Bodies book. I find it really fun that this moss was used to weave a cap that looks like hair, and its common name is haircap moss, but that’s not the reason why it’s just a coincidence!

#Peatlands provide a valuable record of the plants and animals found on the #IsleofMan since the end of the last glaciation ⬇️

The importance of #peatlands in #Manx culture is evident in the literature, art and music of the Island. This picture shows a couple sitting before an open 'chiollagh' or 'fireplace', where peat would have been burned for warmth and cooking 🔥
