Happy birthday to civil rights trailblazer José de la Luz Sáenz, born #OTD in 1888. A teacher, World War I veteran, and community leader, Sáenz dedicated his life to advancing educational opportunity and civil rights for Mexican Americans during a time of widespread segregation and discrimination.

#OTD on May 16, 1968, nearly 400 students at Edgewood High School in San Antonio walked out of class to protest unequal and discriminatory conditions in their schools.

#OTD in 1947, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued its ruling for the case of Mendez, et al v. Westminster School District of Orange County, et al, finding the forced segregation of Mexican American students unconstitutional.

#OTD in 1968, the Civil Rights Act of 1968 became law in the wake of Dr. King’s assassination. Best known for Fair Housing protections, it also strengthened federal civil rights enforcement & extended key protections to Native Americans.
