Just translated an excellent academic paper from Spanish about how Tropical Gar (or pejelagarto) were influential in Yokotan Mayan people. They noted the close similarities between gars and crocodiles and prepared sacrificial gar stews to offer to their river deity for good luck on crocodile hunts!

The oldest European depiction of a gar I have found so far from a map of 'New France' circa 1612. In 1609, Samuel de Champlain previously reported seeing a 'Chaousarou' (the Iroquois name) in Lake Champlain, and the written description fit that of a gar. 1/2

Sharks DO get cancer, as in this Great White observed in 2014 near Australia. Every vertebrate species, with long enough observation, will display cancerous growth, because cancer is "baked-in" to multicellularity & the capacity for growth. Rates vary by species, but *cancer is a constant*.
